So it comes as no surprise that the NDP had to find money to pay for these floods and that would seem obvious as to why the PST would increase 1%. I never said I support Cons... I was pointing out how badly the SpeNDP have been managing the province for the last few years.... and that people who continually blame the Cons are blind.  
 
Oh, great that they fixed the highways.... what about the economy and our taxes?

And I am not worried - the SpeNDP are bottom of the big three in the polls..... I am crossing my fingers they stay there.

I can't find any information on this doctor's strike. Did it happen in 1999? It seems the last doctor's strike in Manitoba that I can find any information for was in 1933. The doctors went on strike against the treatment of poor patients. Predating universal health care, the government at the time required doctors to treat poor patients without payment.  
 
The current financial issues of the current government are products of the past. If we want solutions that work, we can't ignore the past.  
 
The better we understand the past, the better we can plan for the future. We can use our knowledge to help and challenge our elected representatives. It is our democratic privilege and obligation.

There is not a hope in hell that the Liberals under Rana bokaria will be the official opposition. If you are paying attention all her announcements are "stay tuned we will have things to say next week" she is totally out in left field.  
 
Also look like Drew Caldwell has a lock on Brandon East if his signs in private yards mean anything. Isleifson just seems to be cluttering up the boulevards.

And the strike did happen, I can't find anything online either but there are other "events" that aren't online so I am not surprised. I do remember my father being on a picket line sometime in the early 70s - and him saying for years they went on strike for an increase at least on par with inflation. It was not a total strike - they did it on a "rolling" basis so medical care was not compromised. I was a teenager and recall clearly driving him to work so he could picket.

There definitely was a strike of some sort by doctors in the 70's. I remember having to drive my wife across the picket line to get her to work. A rather uncomfortable situation but it did happen.

I am not a supporter of some of the choices that have been made by our current government.  
 
I think Mr. Sellinger should of stepped down at the leadership convention.  
 
the policies with the Bi-pole line also concern me.  
 
However, with the financial trouble that provincial economies have faced, we are not in that bad of condition.  
 
especially with the flooding that has taken place over the last ten years.  
 
to have the services and protections that we all benefit from, costs money. no matter the political stripe.  
 
so I am happy with the over-all performance of the NDP government.

His department agreed with the layoffs of nurses and other frontline staff.  
 
They cut 20% from government employee wages. Filmon Fridays. with the resultant reduction in services.  
 
They privatized a crown corporation that had taken generations of taxpayer money to construct. MTS.  
 
which is something I think NO government elected to a 4 year term has the right to do without a referendum. the electors had no idea that was on the agenda.  
 
they also took money from the Hydro "rainy day" account, and the provincial employee retirement fund to balance their budgets.  
 
In my opinion, someone who doubts past behaviour will not influence future behaviour, will not mind seeing Mr Pallister sitting on the board of a privatized hydro, much as Mr Filmon now does with MTS.  
 
I am not sure I want to take that chance

yeah, haven't seen too many PC signs in private yards. I see Vanessa Hamilton has signs up now on the boulevards. Maybe Drew is so popular he will get back in? He is a polished savvy politician for sure with years of experience. Dunno, time will tell.

I moved to the east end just so I could vote against Caldwell.

Someone who doubts past behaviour will not infuence future behaviour, will not mind the chronic overspending and mismanagement that has been going on the past 17 years then.  
 
You're happy that it took this NDP government almost 3 years to replace the bridges on highways 21 and 251? Or that it took almost as long for the province to replace the bridges on 18th as it did to build the Golden Gate Bridge, which was built in the mid 30's??  
 
You're happy with they way this NDP government dropped the ball on the Crocus Fund Scandal??

the simple answer is that I think the province is in much better sharp now, than when the last conservative government left  
 
at least money for roads and other infrastructure is being spent in the whole province, not just Winnipeg.  
 
we finally got rid of the disaster that the harper government was federally, and now you want similar slash and burn policies in Manitoba with more conservative policies.

Short memories we have.I have listened to cons telling me over and over how the NDP has mismanaged the govt for the past 17 yrs. How convenient that they forget the surpluses posted by the NDP in the early 2000s. The recession that hit in 2008 took its toll globally but manitoba fared pretty well. Cons forget that Harper posted a deficit of $55 B in 2009 but that was ok with them. But if the NDP face the same problems a deficit is seen as mismanagement. The truth is Manitoba is a great province. We have second lowest unemployment rate in the country and the conference board of canada suggests that if we keep going in the same direction we are poised to lead the provinces in growth. So good jobs steady growth does mean something. People complain about the bridges on 18 th st. Can you imagine where we would be if those bridges hadn't been replaced before the flood of 2011? That would have been devastating to the local economy and taken yrs for our city to recover. Thank god the NDP got them done. Look around Brandon. We have a great hospital and cancer treatment center here and more upgrades in the the works. First and 18 th are redone and upgraded. First street bridge uograded. eastern access which helped keep a lot of heavy truck traffic out of town. Victoria ave upgrades. Acc upgrades. The list goes on. Brandon never had it this good under conservative govts and anyone who believes otherwise is dreaming.

Yes, governments can provide us with services but when does the spending stop or slow down? The NDP have no shortage of ideas on how to spend the tax dollars however taxpayers would like a bit of coin in their own pockets so we can enjoy life.

We finally elected a mayor who actually gives a darn about taxpayers. Now we need a provincial government who cares about us too!  
 
Every dollar counts in a lot of households. If we let the NDP back in the PST will be raised again!

When does the spending stop? Well the spending will stop when the govt stops providing services. Its that simple. So if a govt is promising to reduce spending they are also planning to reduce services plain and simple.As far as seniors housing the NDP has promised $3.1M towards the proposed co-op seniors housing project in Brandon. So my question to you is this, should the govt not help in this manner? Should the govt increase spending to build new seniors homes? on one hand you want less govt spending but on the other you want more.

needs money to provide services, that is a no-brainer. I guess I should have said when will this govt stop their out of control spending?  
 
I'm talking about personal care homes. Some smaller communities have raised their own cash to build personal care homes. Do you think it should be this way?  
What was the last personal care home that was built in Brandon?

It has been a lot of years since the Conservatives have been in power and I don't think we should go back that far in blaming them for the provinces current situation. That being said, these last few years would have been a challenge for any government in power. Reggie 2 mentioned some of the highways that were fixed. There is also 83 hwy from Virden to Melita and I couldn't even begin to count the number of bridges in the southwest area that needed replacement. "Oh great they fixed the highways" as Cee Jay said but that means a lot to us who rely on them everyday to go to our jobs, our schools, our medical and to get supplies in. Then there are all the dikes in the city of Brandon and the southwest that were built to help alleviate problems in the future. Our medical system can be improved in a lot of ways but to have Cancer Care in Brandon with their radiology and chemotherapy treatment facilities there and chemotherapy in communities such as Deloraine and other centers is a true blessing to those who need it. I wonder sometimes if people who didn't live in areas devastated by the flooding in the last few years actually realize how much damage was done. As I said, I don't think any Government could have been prepared or handled things differently in that respect.

What the people need is for the governments, whomever is in power, is to provide value for what they get. Manitoba is not getting good value for what they get. We have poor health care and poor education, to name a few. We have those same institutions that are top heavy in administration sucking money out of where it is needed.  
 
Yes, we need services to be provided by the government. We also need those services to be supplied by the government to give us good value for our money, which is currently getting worse and worse.  
 
This past summer, I've seen highways in MB that had vehicle damaging potholes that were months before they were fixed. I've seen bridges in SK being replaced in months, versus a year or longer in MB. We need value for our tax dollars!!!!

If you are in dire straits because you can't afford a small tax hike I don't think you have your own finances in order.

This is the second time in my life that I have really seen the purchasing power of certain segments of society take a beating. My father bought land in the early sixties and the people who received the money were supposed to be set for life, but along came the seventies with very strong inflation which took a major toll on those savings and with in a few years the savings of those people were gone. Things might have worked our ok for them except investment rates trailed inflation.  
 
If you are a senior on a fixed income we are seeming something somewhat similar happen today. At a certain point one has to avoid high risk investments and if you look at returns on many things they are coming close to trailing inflation once again. Looking at education taxes, the increases are well beyond inflation as well as conservative investments. Once a person reaches retirement age a whole lot of factors change for individuals. Shouldn't call people production units, but in a way that is what we are, and once you are no longer a production unit, a small increase may not seem that small as far as taxes go.  
 
Just my thoughts, and this doesn't apply to everyone, but to a large number of people it does.

Short of being uncousious, its just as fast to jump in the vehicle and drive youreself.     Bottom line, if Pallister gets in there really isnt much left to cut, and if the only argument you have for Sellinger is what filmon did 20 years ago, then maybe you should think again. We had alot better healthcare 20 years ago than we do today. And to anyone in the city that thinks rural healthcare isnt important to them, take a look around the next time youre at a clinic or the hospital, talk to the person beside you and see where they are from and ask why they are there, the answer just might surprise you. Its time everyone took a little interst in this province before its too late. "

You have to have been living under a rock if you think Healthcare was better 20 years ago. I remember going into Brandon's hospital 20 years ago and seeing patients on beds in the hospital hallways. Sure some rural hospitals are understaffed and can't get doctors, but rural living is not what it used to be. As people age they want services and many move closer to the bigger cities which can provide the services. Doctors want a lifestyle that is not found in many rural towns. Waiting lists on seniors homes in Brandon are being maxed out by rural residents.  
 
So the bottom line is that it is not the NDP's fault that demographics are changing. Pallister will not change things either as that is something that you just can't fix by throwing more money at it and as we know he is bent on cutting back rather than moving forward.

After almost 20 consecutive years in power and the ndp faithful are still blaming the filmon gov. for our problems? What kind of gov. takes 20 years to fix things? Nothing has been fixed. At 36 billion we have the highest debt. per capita in the country ( sask. debt. is 5 billion ) mb. has the highest number of gov. employees per capita in the country ( each gov. job costs you the taxpayer more money ) Our teachers are among the highest paid in the country, yet our student test scores are the lowest in the country! Our health system is so top heavy with administration it can't function properly, why are wait times for mri's etc. so long? The construction industry is getting choked by unions and extreme ,irrelevant and burdensome building codes and ver zealous safety rules and guidelines It's time the ndp took responsibility for their own mismanagement. ( het've had 20 years to figure it out.

It is either subsidized by one government or another or paid for in its entirety.   I support Drew and the Ndp because I believe they have done great things for our city and will continue to do great things for our city.   Even Deveryn Ross says "nobody should doubt he spends every waking hour of every working day being the NDP MLA for Brandon East."     " are okay with NDP!     Yes, governments can provide us with services but when does the spending stop or slow down? The NDP have no shortage of ideas on how to spend the tax dollars however taxpayers would like a bit of coin in their own pockets so we can enjoy life.     There are a lot of people in dire straits in this city and I guess you aren't one of them!     We finally elected a mayor who actually gives a darn about taxpayers. Now we need a provincial government who cares about us too!     Every dollar counts in a lot of households. If we let the NDP back in the PST will be raised again!     I'm tired of the explaining of what the NDP does with our tax dollars! They're full of ideas but the money tree looks bare!     Seniors are waiting a long time for housing right now, when is the last time a care home has been built by the current government? " If you are in dire straits because you can't afford a small tax hike I don't think you have your own finances in order. "

under previous mayor. PST went up. A lot of working people are having a tough time and I guess you're not one of them.  
 
When people go shopping (do you personally grocery shop) and that beef roast is 30 to 40 dollars, guess what? The majority of people can't afford to purchase. We've seen heads of cauliflower at 7 bucks, peppers at 5 bucks a pound, but hey no worries eh? For you maybe.  
 
If the NDP get in they will raise the PST again because they will take their winning as an endorsement of their taxing ways, end of.  
 
We have yet to hear of how much our water rates are going up, there is talk of Hydro raising their rates 45% over the next 5 years, how do you figure these hikes are small? BSD is hitting us with another tax increase, it all adds up!

I'd be fine with paying more gas tax if the money went to repairing our roads and highways. They are embarrassing.  
 
Not sure who said Hydro would raise their rates 45% over the next 5 years, but they are wrong. Hydro has been asking for 3.95% a year. And who the heck buys a $30 beef roast when they're on a budget? Isn't beef pretty much the most expensive meat?

The civil service has become top heavy with too many managers and not enough workers. The Ndp has populated the civil service with Ndp yes men over the last 17 years and it time for more workers and less management. When a govt is in for this long people get complacent and don't do their jobs. Time for a total look at the civil service and the Ndp just won't do that. In private businesses the poor workers are weeded out,but in Union and govt work seniority rules.

It's what they do and I am glad to see them falling in the polls. It is high time we voted in a party that will cut the BLOATED government payroll and rein in the reckless spending rather than INCREASE TAXES to line their faithful's pockets.  
 
Look at some of the other provinces that "booted" the SpeNDP..... did they falter or prosper afterwards? As my mother used to say, "The proof is in the pudding."
