it is as serious as mental illness is very serious. Depression, anxiety, PTSD, postpartum are all as serious as schizophrenia, until treatment and medication works. So, if you have it, even a mild condition is serious.

Bipolar disorders (hypomanic, manic, depressive, and mixed)
Major depressive disorders (single episode or recurrent)
