Well, that seems kinda dumb that they didn't even examine you. But maybe you gave them enough information that it's the most likely diagnosis (plus, you might have been the 8th person they've seen that afternoon with identical complaints, so they know it's going around). I don't know. I know if I bring my kids, they're always examined but I can't remember for sure if I'm always checked or if they just base it on my reported symptoms.
The truth is that some people who attend docs for things like "a cold that lasts a few weeks" are there for only one reason: they want antibiotics whether they actually need them or not. Some people will kick up a stink if the doctor says, "you'll be fine, it's just a virus, go home". My dad, after me having a cold for 3 days, tells me I should go to the doctor. Why? Because he thinks I should have antibiotics, even for a cold.
So there is that balance between demands to get the patients in and out fast, people coming in because there's an expectation that they're walking out with a prescription, and actually doing an examination. I don't know if the doctor's ever going to win in that scenario because they'll always be wrong according to someone.
