I have always had issues, but in the last two years I began having bad "attacks" - you are right, GP doctors do not care to find the issue, they just want to give pills.
I found for me, triggers were highly processed foods and gluten - once I cut that stuff out my bouts almost completely disappeared. Not 100% mind you, but they are manageable now. I find it is more of a gluten sensitivity coupled with processing that does me in. For instance, I can have small amounts of home made white bread, but if I try to eat white bread from a package, the result is bad.
I can eat small amounts of pasta with home made sauces, but I cannot touch "Kraft Dinner". It is such an odd trigger for me. I can, however, eat Mini Wheats with no ill effect. I guess higher fibre wheat products are tolerable for me.
Try cutting out things one at a time to see if they make a difference, you may get lucky.
I also drink a lot of kefir or eat yogurt. When I was bad, I was taking a high concentrate probiotic supplement as well to try and keep flare ups at bay.
