Severe t-storm watch

As far as I can recall, the first watch-worthy possibility of the season for a severe t-storm this afternoon into this evening as per Env Canada:

As always, a watch are Env Canada alerting to potential for a storm to develop but are not a guarantee (that would be a "warning").
That said, from radar (or my own two eyes ) it does look like something is brewing just to the Southwest of Brandon that's worth keeping an eye on in the short-term:

Looks to me like the storm to the Southwest has become quite severe:

Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:

City of Brandon
Mun. of Oakland-Wawanesa incl. Carroll
R.M. of Cornwallis west of Shilo incl. Chater
At 4:21 p.m. CDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.

This cluster of severe thunderstorms is currently located from Shilo to Pipestone and is tracking slowly northwards.

Twoonie sized hail was recently reported near Beresford.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Rain barrels are topped up, so no complaints.
10.9mm recorded at Brandon South, 11.9 at Brandon West as per weather page.

Started raining out west of Souris around 1:00, no wind in our area just a nice rain that added up to 12mm or half and inch. Headed off to Brandon and noticed it was really dark west of # 21 hiway. Spent an hour and a half in Brandon and received a video from home of heavy rain and pea sized hail, enough hail to turn the ground white. We took #10 home hoping to miss out on rain that looked to be heavy to the west of Brandon, but hit heavy rain, strong winds and some large sized hail south of Clemente hill, going west on #2 it did not seem much moisture until Souris, then it started getting wet. Total at our farm was better than 1 1/2 inches, lots of water in the fields. I'm thinking in our area the fire risk is over.
A general rain would have likely benefitted everyone, there likely were areas that missed out, although it does show us that it still can rain.

Emergency Alerts???

Why wasn't there an alert? This was a severe thunderstorm that hit many areas. If you were driving, an alert may have changed your mind of going a certain direction or even leaving your home at all.

In Douglas, it came on fast and furious. An emergency alert would have been nice. Perhaps they are only using those for what effects "Winnipeg"....

Seriously?? Well probably because the emergency alerting system is for emergencies. Not just every thunderstorm that rolls in. This is Manitoba and the Prairies they come several times every year. We can't be sounding the alarm every time it storms or it would lose its effectiveness pretty fast. No one would care when something serious actually did happen.

Thunderstorms can turn very Nasty very Fast

What can I say? The point of the alert system is for emergencies. Severe thunderstorms which sometimes drop a lot of rain and hail in a quick period of time can cause flash flooding.

If you watch channels from the US, they are giving out emergency alerts for any type of "storm" that may cause damage.

Thunderstorms also have the potential to cause Tornados that even Environment Canada don't see coming.

Emergencies aren't just declarations of war or alien invasions.

This alert system if used properly which means alerting whenever there is a potential for people to be harmed.

As others said, we get many thunderstorms in the Prairies. If we had ever get a tornado warning or a storm with really high winds and damaging hail, we probably would get an emergency alert. By the way, if one gets a text alert while you are driving, you are not to be looking at your cell phone!

Weather Alerts

We received countless Weather Alerts on our weather radio today in regards to the thunderstorms. It’s an old school system by Environment Canada. The new system over cell phones didn’t work properly, they need to work out the bugs. We received 30mm of rain near cottonwood acres.

It didn’t work properly when they tested not implying was suppose to sent out a warning today.

You’re asking for something the system isn’t intended for. They've published the kind of alerts that the system is setup for here:

The only natural triggers will be tornado, flash flood, earthquake, hurricane.

If they made your phone scream for every thunderstorm warning, people wouldn't take the alerts seriously when it comes time to warn for the 10-bells-serious life-or-death emergencies like those listed above. Thats not to say a thunderstorm cant spawn a tornado, but in that case they would put out a tornado warning and you would get the alert.

If you want alerts to come right to you for important but less critical weather warnings, Environment Canada does make that info available... one option being the Brandon-specific Twitter account that Env Canada maintains. If you were setup with that account you would've gotten the warning this afternoon:

I was watching ctv news at 6 in brandon on westman cable. The tv cut out and an alert came on for a weather warning in the lake manitoba area. Large hail damaging winds and a lot of rain. But there was nothing said on it for brandon or near surrounding area

This is partially I am against emergency alerts on tv. We are a good 150 km from Lake Manitoba. The alert in the instance should be shown to those who live maybe Portage, Sandy Lake and possibly Oak Point area, not Brandon.
