Safe driving during yesterdays storm

If you drive a big tall truck and can rip through yesterdays flooded streets no problem, great. But please think about other drivers on the road, especially those in lower vehicles who need to drive SLOW.
To whomever was tailing me in my car so hard through the deep waters while I was trying to get home yesterday with your big truck, I wish I let you rear end me now that I think about it.
Why are some drivers so entitled? There truly needs to be a drivers license refresh test every few years because once in your lifetime doesn't cut it and there's too many out there with ego's as big as their trucks, brains the size of a tennis ball, and zero regard for anyone but themselves.

I also think that everyone who drove fast down residential streets causing the water to wave should be so kind as to help those whose basements were affected worse because of this. Try a little common sense let alone courtesy.

Just brutal these last couple days. Watched a Jeep and truck one after the other rip through a flooded intersection last night right beside a house that was already dealing with water in basement. Some will be out driving because they have to get from A to B but quite sure there are many that are out for "fun" of it.
On Sunday a big black rig smashed right through a city barrier to get to 18th and Park at the time DQ was an Island, only to circle back for another go.

Police no doubt have their hands full responding to the storm, setting up and maintaining blockades but I’d love if there was a way to further deter this. The first thing that pops into some of these peoples’ heads when a storm rolls through shouldn’t be glee and a chance to see what their truck is made of!

That it says more about poor driving attitudes than anything and will only be curtailed with proper punishment. Drivers have to understand the danger they are causing to others and themselves by driving through floodwaters. If people saw what water does when a motor sucks it in the intake they wouldn’t risk their vehicle. I’ve lost count of the engines that I have rebuilt and replaced because their owners tried to drive through floodwater.

It is sad the amount of people who do this, and there is no one classification (I cannot say it is the younger generation, as I witnessed people my age doing it as well).

While out surverying how things were around our place, my bf and I walked up the street to check things out (this was on Sunday with that first round of rain), and there was 2 large trucks that just kept driving up and down Stickney near my area, as fast as they could to make those big waves. Even with standing on the sidewalk, they did not slow down one bit (I noticed them and realized they were not slowing down so I stepped back as not to be splashed).

There was even a 3rd truck that was actually driving slowly because they saw us and didnt want to cause waves/splash us, but one of the 2 first trucks sped up and around him to show off.

Very sad.

I can think of one way to deter it. Use your phone and start recording. But instead of putting those videos on FB or YT, send them to BPS. Let these idiots get a nasty little surprise in the mail a few weeks after they have no doubt long since forgotten about these past few days.

We were shown a FB post of drivers bragging about driving their big trucks through the water and laughing that they were upsetting people whose houses were affected. Apparently being “it’s a free country” (their words), they feel they are allowed to further contribute to the damage of peoples’ homes. Just shows their level of maturity and integrity. I hope they never have to clean up sewer water in their furnished basements and have minimal or no insurance coverage!

I had the privilege of a front row seat to a discussion between one of these drivers and someone effected by what happens when they rip through overland flooding next to property.
Lines used included:
-that the owner of the effected property should build somewhere else
-that all land is crown land and that they don't own the land (they do)
-that the property owner should go in the military if they want to know what real disasters are like (please don't make assumptions about our fine military folks re this, this was just one person who for all I know had nothing to do with the military)
When it was pointed out to the driver that they should be at home tending to their own house (which apparently had water problems), the comment from the driver was that "that's what insurance is for."

I realize not everyone is like this, but it was a real eye opener that probably the only thing to get through to some of these types is a ticket or a damaged vehicle.

I have no problem with someone in a canoe but these vehicles need to stay the hell off flooded streets!

who think they can do anything they want because they think it's fun, then use the lame excuses that you listed. They need to be fined and punished!!! This is where I hope a manhole cover popped and they damage their vehicle hitting it. KARMA!!

Seen a city bus try to race through on Sycamore last night, a home owner made him stop and gave him heck!! That bus was stopped while the driver decided weather to go through or not, but decided to essentially floor it causing massive waves towards already flooded homes. Hope the homeowner makes a formal complaint.

The road to my home is dirt. The amount of trucks that have come and destroyed it entirely and put large mud holes in it is insane. My neighbours with vehicles can’t drive through it currently due to the amount of water and mud, and once the water clears they still won’t be able to as the road is entirely tore up. My three neighbours homes are still surrounded by water and this isn’t helping.
I get it, I also have a lifted 4x4 with oversized tires.. but I don’t destroy roads or trails especially when it’s causing damage to other people’s homes/property. The rain was everywhere, not hard to find a place to go that 4x4s are allowed. There’s a literal website that gives you directions to places off roading is allowed. Why be a douche and make a bad situation worse for home owners?

The bus driver should have done what? Take the bus off the designated route and go some other way, where people waiting for it wouldn't know where it was? Unless the city closes the street or his supervisor tells him to take a different route, the driver pretty much has to follow the posted bus route. It's not like it's his own personal vehicle, he can't just go wherever he feels like.

Entitlement, no one is going to slow me down, if you can't/won't drive as fast as I want to go you shouldn't be on the road. That right there is the attitude of so many drivers out there today. It wasn't always that way and they certainly weren't retesting drivers regularly back then. It just seemed like people, in general, were more considerate. Today, so many people seem to have a "right now isn't soon enough" attitude. Retesting would accomplish nothing. They didn't forget how to drive, they choose to drive like a-holes. If you retest them, they will drive like model drivers just to pass the test. As soon as they pass, they will have a license to go out and drive like a total a-hole, speeding, tailgating, basically breaking every rule of the road for another five years.

Re read what they said. The driver was driving very quickly causing massive waves. They just wanted the driver to slow down for a tad second. They do it in the winter time when the roads are awful, they could do it for a flooded block to reduce waves as well. No one wanted the driver off the route, just to slow down..
