Business as usual to start the day at the mall from what I can see, except library location closed for the day. Coles hasn't opened with everyone else, not clear if they're just late. Sysco truck even pulled up doing a delivery To the food court. Wind almost blew the Tims coffee out of my hand when I got outside but that's another story :)

I expected there to be poor visibility on the highways, but the whiteout going down park ave east earlier was kind of surprising, definitely don't be out unless truly necessary.

Thanks for adding that. Visibility sure looks bad even in the city already. North Hill camera might as well be pointed at a blank white sheet of paper. It's expected to continue to worsen through the day. The thing that I don’t think always gets thought through when a person goes out is you still have to get back. As some of those especially dense areas with as much as 5cm/hour of snow move in things can change big time in a hurry. This is a real deal blizzard and needs to be taken seriously as one.

When I was in about an hour ago I noticed a few more stores closed but couldn't say if it was just for lunch or for the rest of the day.... Shoe company, Reitmans, Maurice’s, Scorteus , Ecko ultd, Q home, Bentley, GameStop. Vast majority were still sticking it out.

More mall stores closing

More stores have closed in the mall since the last posted. Although the mall closes at 6, stores have the option of closing earlier. Good idea to call ahead if you are trying to get to a specific location today.

Just got back from getting my pres:cription at Safeway no problem whatsoever driving on the roads a little bit slushy. Basically a really windy winter day. I was expecting to be shovelling out my driveway but I don’t even need to . The snow has all blown somewhere else.

I just left work at the hospital and the roads were fine, a bit slushy but fine. I didn’t even have a snowflake on my car and that’s from 7 this morning. It’s definitely windy though

Hard to make blanket assumptions about conditions because of the whacky stuff the wind is doing with everything. I just dealt with our driveway that was packed with 12-15 inches across with some of the heaviest snow you’ll ever see. All about 50 feet away from the street where I could see pavement. Imagine because of how dense it is, if stuck it’s not an easy conquest. Then mix in that things will change by the hour!
going by the deck that isn't very wind exposed, we've had 10-15cm/4-6 inches so far by who knows??

Brandon may have been spared the heavy accumulations, will have to see what overnight brings. Seems like it mostly melted on contact. Many areas have just a skiff of snow while the wind made some drifts in other places. Would be interested in what the official amount was. I'm sure we did get more than what is on the ground.

Wont say I've watched every minute, but what I've seen on radar has had Brandon on either side of the heaviest ofnthe heavy snow areas for most of the day so far. A little over my head as far as how areas of precip progress when you have the different lows at play. EC forecast has another 5-10cm tonight and 5cm more tomorrow for Brandon.
Weatherlogics just issued the update at the link below with forecast accumulations for Thursday and Friday. Brandon in their zone of another 8-10cm tomorrow on top of whatever we still might get tonight….

Well we live at the mercy of the weather. It literally controls everything that we do, it can make or break us in a heartbeat and is the main factor determining our production which ultimately provides food for everyone else.
We were that dry last year and have effectively been in a four to five year drought so I am grateful to see more moisture. However with calves coming blizzard conditions are a difficult time and makes for dangerous work while feeding and checking cattle.

Still quite the mess on radar to the East. As much as it doesnt look pretty out there in Brandon this AM and isn't something I'd have a lot of interest in trying to get around in, I think when accumulation totals come out for different parts of MB we're gonna find out how lucky the immediate Brandon area itself has been to have been just spared by the heaviest of the heavy of the snow.

Yup, roads that didn’t get snow pack because of the wind are extremely icy… and then randomly you never know when you run into something like this:

Not far away at Douglas, 24cm.

I live off highway 10 south and I am so shocked that I am not many (1!) grader or sanding truck... I am shocked that they have shut down all highways in southern Manitoba for what is a normal winter snow storm!

Anyone else feeling like this is a tad overboard? If things were kept up, and sanding/salting/clearing was done, people could continue on - with needed winter driving precautions...

The issue is that if this system did dump 60CM+ in Brandon consistently and the province did nothing it would be a problem.

Now that the system was a "failure" it is also an issue that the province went overboard in preparation.

So I guess its a lose lose..

Yes it's a lose, lose. People will always find a reason to complain.

I have lived in the prairies all my life and the Spring snowstorms are way more dangerous to drive in than the December snowstorms. This heavy wet snow can really drag you all over the place. Also this time of year lots of people have already taken off their winter tires. Not to mention the visibility issues with the winds that we had.

I am okay with the province shutting down the roads to keep people safe. Sadly a lot of people won't stay off the roads when "travel isn't recommended."
