"Hot" December, brown Christmas?

Looking at Environment Canada's forecast for the foreseeable future and it reads more like one for October than for December. The high that's expected for today of +8 would shatter a 26 year old record of 5.4 degrees. All the way through next Thursday high temps are anywhere from 3 to 9 degrees including decent possibility of rain in the middle of the week.... All of which which would obliterate any of the white stuff that's still on the ground.

Our weather can turn on a dime... But brown Christmas anyone?

it would be the first time in my life, as a full time Manitoban that I would see a brown Christmas here at home. Everyday without snow is a bonus day for me, easier to walk, drive, just easier to get about. And...no shovelling, big boots, or warming/scraping the car.

Will have to confirm this but if my eyes arent deceiving me, the reading that eBrandon pulls from Environment Canada's regular readings looks to have topped out at 11 degrees this afternoon. That would be 18 degrees higher than the normal high temp for Dec 4

There was no snow until December 25th in the afternoon. So it almost was. But this could be neat if it was true!! Judging by the upcoming temperatures, that might not happen.

remember in 1998, we didn't have snow till after Christmas. My family went down to Phoenix for Christmas that year, and the only snow we saw there was at Kitt Peak National Observatory. When we left home there was no snow, but coming back home from Winnipeg there was a snowstorm.

Yes, as with the warm December we can expect to get a huge pile of snow dumped on us in March-April time. There was the one year where we had a May 1st snowstorm, everything was covered in the stuff.

In the 97/98 el nino winter, I remember seeing willow trees showing signs of buds in Jan/Feb. Was reading that this el nino has the potential to make an even warmer winter than that one.

I am loving this weather!!! I am not grouchy and miserable.....but a bit anxious wondering if we'll pay for this later and just get dumped on!! Lol

Walks, trips to the park, playing outside...all so much more enjoyable this year

I'll admit, it doesn't have the Christmas feel to it but I think if this were to happen to more often, I'd get used to it! Lol. Here's to hoping right?!

Enjoying these extra chances to get the little guy to the playground while it lasts!
Another record set today with the temp at 6.7 degrees and I think still rising. Prev record was 5.6. Still expected to be warm until the weekend including a double-digit high on Wednesday and an overnight low that would stay above zero.

One of the more fascinating things for me is how much warmer we are than Winnipeg. The warmest day they're expected to have before the weekend is today's +3. If you take our Wednesday high of +10, we're supposed to be a full eight degrees higher than the big city. Maybe the beginning of a tourism industry?

Forecast for Saturday has us finally returning to more seasonal norms (high of -7).

History time - was the El Nino year before or AFTER the huge winter storm that caused all that flooding in Spring of 97?

Yeah I could look it up myself I guess, but just curious of the events and how they happened.

I recall two very large storms in the winter before the floods of 97 - one so big they closed the malls in Winnipeg because the stores could not get enough staff to run. Just trying to recall the timeline and it will be interesting to see how things happen.

I miss those huge dumps of snow - we have not had a really good one in so long....

The info shows the 96/97 winter was nearly the opposite of el nino, el ninA.

It also shows the 10/11 winter that led to the flood as being an official el nina.

I remember the spring of '98 getting a huge dump of snow too.

I cant find historical precipitation data for this area to compare, to get a definite answer on what or if there's a snowfall correlation for our area.

Flood Was First...

The Red River/Winnipeg Flood of '97 occurred in April-May of 1997. The almost snow-free December and "green Christmas" was later that same year. We didn't get our snow here in Brandon until the 28th or 29th of December 1997.

I also remember that we did have a large amount of snow dumped on us around the end of March '97.

Starting to see grass in a few places you wouldn't normally in the middle of winter. Between the plus temps, rain and wind forecasted today that's going to continue. Brown Valentines Day anyone.... Kidding but not kidding?

In seriousness it sounds like a return to seasonal temps next week but fun while it lasts...

Even if it was just for a short while, the little break we've had from "winter" right now has been nice. Just nice enough to melt enough so that we could actually pick up dog poop in the yard properly and not be so surprised in the spring with all the stuff that ends up hiding under the snow. LOL!
