Severe storms, July 5

Lots of watches and warnings in place around Westman tonight... not the least of which being a tornado warning that's in place for:

- Hamiota Mun. incl. McConnell and Lavinia
- Prairie View Mun. incl. Bird Tail Creek Res.
- R.M. of Yellowhead incl. Shoal Lake and Elphinstone

Not even a watch in place for Brandon as of this exact moment. Weather is of course unpredictable at the best of times but all you have to do is look at the sky to consider that we should be prepared for the possibility of some form of storm within the next hour or two.

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:

City of Brandon
Mun. of Glenboro-South Cypress incl. Treesbank
Mun. of Norfolk Treherne
Mun. of North Cypress-Langford incl. Neepawa and Carberry
Mun. of North Norfolk incl. MacGregor Sidney and Austin
Mun. of Oakland-Wawanesa incl. Carroll
R.M. of Cornwallis west of Shilo incl. Chater
R.M. of Elton incl. Forrest
R.M. of Victoria incl. Holland and Cypress River
Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

A moist and unstable airmass is in place this evening in southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba. A few thunderstorms have developed along a surface trough line. Some of these thunderstorms may become severe with large hail and heavy rain being the main threats. There is also the risk of an isolated tornado with these severe thunderstorms.

Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Remember, severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Not to create panic but to underscore severity of storms tonight. Weather Network identified the storm thats headed in Brandons general direction as having rotation. Just a thunderstorm watch as of now but definitely one to keep an eye on over the next little bit.

Looks clear to the north of Brandon, but still very volatile to the south.

Great light show

Starting around 9:45 until 10:30 we had a great lightning display with cloud to cloud lightning as well as lots of ground strikes, some of them were real close.
Not sure of rainfall totals around the area but I'm beginning to think we are living in thunderstorm ally with another 9/10 ths of an inch of rain.
