It all depends on how much use you re planning.
Like said above, pay-as-you-go may be the best. For unlimited texting and some talk and data, Public Mobile is your best bet right now. It is part of Telus and has good coverage. $15/month get unlimited text and 100 minutes talk time. If you do autopay, you get $2 off per month and 250MB data.
Telus has three brands. Public Mobile, Koodo, and the main Telus. Telus plans are usually the most expensive.

If you are okay with a credit check, Koodo usually has pretty good postpaid plans which will allow you to get a phone on their tab. If you time it right, you may get a phone with ample gift cards on their small tab. After three months, you can pay off the tab anytime (small=:$240, $10 coming off per month). Net price on a phone can work out pretty cheap.
