MTS non-contract phone plans?? (contract is soon up)

Okay my 3 year contract is soon finished. Haven't decided what I'll do but my current phone still works fine so can I assume I can get a better price on my monthly plan now that my contract is up and my phone is paid for? Also what does MTS do at the end of my contract if I don't do anything, just carry on billing me the same?
