Laptop Range Extender

I am looking for a device to extend the range of my Laptop when I am out at the lake.I am presently receiving a weak signal. I hear there is a device out there that plugs into the USB port of the computer,that boosts the signal strength. Has anyone used this device and if so,how well does it work.
