I was over at my elderly neighbours house putting in a light switch for them. The phone rings, the lady looks at the call display and basically breaks down into tears. She says, "they phone 4 or 5 times a day, and never stop." I picked it up and listened to the caller.  
 
305-224-1726 is what shows up on the call display. The area code makes it a Florida number. It says it is Revenue Canada, and charges have been filed against them for fraudulent tax claims being filed. They are supposed to call back to a number to resolve this immeadiately.

They are a MTS land line . How do I go about helping them, have this number blocked? It might not be the only number this will happen with, but obviously it has brought them to frustration and tears. If I can offer them some help and relief, I would greatly appreciate it.

I don't think you can block them and even if you could these idiots are using what they call a pinger number and just keep registering for a new number. It used to be that they would get whatever number pinger gave them but now it seems you can request 204 area codes which tends to make you want to answer their calls. I am at the point now that unless I know the number I don't even bother answering and they usually wont leave a message.

I had the same number four or five times a day. I called MTS and asked what I could do. I knew it was not their problem, but wanted some kind of answer. They told me to make sure I am on the do not call list - you can register your neighbor on the internet, although I was on that list and it obviously didn''t help.  
 
Then the MTS representative told me to answer the phone when it is that number hang up and dial *___, this is where I threw the paper out that I had it written on. Anyway, when you dial *__, it goes to the police for their registry. I did that and they have not called back. I want to say *57, but really can''t remember.  
 
They are a "pinger" number and you can't block them.

I've gotten to the point now that I use them as a punching bag for stress relief, as soon as they start into their pitch, whether or not it seems like a recording, I start cursing them out with every insult I can muster.  
 
Sometimes I get lucky and a call I could swear was a recording has someone start swearing back, LOL.

tell them I worked for Revenue Canada and we spoke English and we never ever call someone, that a letter is sent to person and started asking waht/where his department was located, maybe we worked together and he hung up. That lasted about three days before they started calling again.

Buy them a phone that i:ncludes call blocking as a feature.

Try this. Have a referee's whistle handy. Go along with the prompts, push #1 for a live person. When you are speaking to a real person, speak softly so they can hardly hear you. When the ask you to speak up (they will be listening closely), let them have it. They don't usually call back after you "blow the whistle on them". Its the only thing they understand!

Someone said to answer the phone calls with "thank you for calling, you are on the air..."  
 
Sad that we have to resort to these methods.  
 
To the OP - I wonder if there is such a land line phone available that this couple can set a special ringtone to the callers that they want to take calls from ie family and doctors and such. I know I can do that with my Blackberry, hubby and kids each have a ringtone, as well as certain people I talk to on a regular basis.  
 
Then they know to ignore the unknown calls? I know it is not a solution, but a start.

that is a great line to use on them, but I don't suppose It will keep them from calling back?

I have registered both my husband's and my phone on the "Do Not Call" list. This seems to work well for a few months, and then find that you need to go back and re-register your number again. But it seems to get the job done, as we haven't had any annoying scams come through for nearly a year now!!! I think I updated our numbers every 3 months just to make sure that we avoid this annoyance.

If you have a phone line near your computer you can route it to the computer modem (if you have one) then to your phone . This allows you to use programs to block the call. It also displays the number onscreen. I use it all the time. It also lets you use different lines to block the call.. Like homer simpson or Fred Flintstone.

Borrow Tony DiNozzo's line from an episode of NCIS...answer the phone "You have reached a crime scene" that always gets a hang up....or simply state that "Your call is being recorded for use with prosecution evidence...."
