Taxes on School supplies

I learned at work a couple of nights ago that school supplies are supposed to be tax free??? When at the till, just say that they are school supplies and like kids clothes they will take off the taxes. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm gonna see when I go get supplies this year. Anyone else heard of this?
