Living wage vs Welfare rates/reform
3/11/2009 at 10:16 AM
As we see in these wounderful economic difficult times more of the haves are becoming have nots. "I see more people who had jobs a few weeks ago coming through asking for Assistance" Thats was what a coffee pal told me who works for the NPO. Most people don't have the ability to save three months wages in case of lay off, or even enough for extra food. in case of Flu or sickness. Cars are a dream for most living on a min wage job. so shopping local like stans is becoming unreachable for those seniors that used to be able to live off of CPP/Old Age Security. the average pensioner gets $1300.00 per month. take into account medications $300. Food $200. Rent $400, there is NOT lots of left. I do think stans prices are VERY high for seniors. Food should not have to cost this much, so, this spring, I will be taking over a plot of land in the city and doing an urban Garden...Donating that food to the food Bank, I ENCOURAGE all of us to do the same, pant potatos, carrots, lettece, tomatos(Make Selza) mmmmm in January. So, people I encourage to know where your food is coming from, if you know of a person who does not use there back yard, ask them to donate the space for a garden, that you will take care of, and they can pick from. Think locally. your doller does go along way regardless of where you spend it, weather it superstore, Safeway, stans, lots of Brandonnits work Mcjobs jobs, at these place we visit daily. The Last thing we need is more people coming through food bank lines up or on welfare, So SPEND your Hard earned cash keep your friend employed.
