Energy efficient laundry sets - how to??

I have small kids so I do a lot of laundry, and need to get a new set soon. I have been comparing features, benefits, energy ratings and such for months now and there is just so much information to go through. I would appreciate any ideas, thoughts, troubles, anything to help pick out the right set! Are there features on your set you thought would be great but have turned out useless? Have you had a bad experience with a certain brand? Are they as energy efficient as they say? Any opinions would be helpful!
