Heating Pads vs Old Fashioned Hot Water Bottle

My mom requested a hot water bottle for Christmas this year. My question to you folks is, is there a better alternative out there than the old fashioned rubber hot water bottle?
Do the gel heating pads that you boil to reactivate produce heat longer, or about the same amount of time? Which do you prefer? Where would I purchase one of good quality?
