I must have hit it right and could read it before, but now I can''''t. It says it will start with stored in Ontario and move across the country. Canada only. Thatlink is the Wall Street Journal.

I'''d assume it's to get more people to sign up with their MasterCard? I have one and even though I don't use it very often, the rewards are nice. My husband has visa but gets nothing for using his so I'm happy I went with the Walmart MasterCard. If anyone is thinking of signing up, I'd suggest doing so. You can also pay with mc and than pay with cash or debit right after so that you don't get the interest on your bill. You can do all this right at the cashier (which actually, I need to start doing more to get higher rewards!)  
 
Most people these days have more than one card so I''m sure they're not too worried. People say all the time that they hate Walmart and won't/don't shop there but in the end, many many people shop there because it is really hard to beat their prices and walmart is doing just fine with their current shopping population  
 
Personally, give me the Walmart zoo any day over the SS zoo....altho, I'd prefer the costco zoo

I'm sure you're right, they want more people to sign up with their card. Just one thing to watch out for, they are VERY persistent trying to get you to take the insurance that I don't need or want. Had to be very firm (almost rude with a few of the reps) to get them to back off on it.  
Don't understand what you mean by paying twice and then getting more rewards? You don't get interest on yur bill unless you pay it late. Maybe you could clue me in..... Thanks.

Sorry for the confusion!! I mean you can put your bill on the credit card, get the rewards and than turn around and pay your credit card bill right away with cash or debit at the same cashier. You don't get double rewards though.

Without knowing the intimacies of negotiations between these two it's hard to know who to blame, but sure sucks for the consumer to be caught in the middle. Wonder what chances are that this actually goes on long enough to go beyond the few Ontario stores they're starting with.

Depends on your circumstances Sammy. I didn't feel I needed it as my income is guaranteed (meaning that I am really, really old and income is from pensions).  
However, younger people probably feel more comfortable having some protection in case of accidents, job loss, etc.  
It's definitely a personal choice, didn't mean to sound like it wasn't a good idea. I just get my back up when people try to sell me something I don't want.

I often use my Visa there to collect points. The idea for me is to have less plastic not more. I rewally don't see myself getting their Mastercard.  
 
I like Superstore so will perhaps go there more often than I do now.

So much for Walmart for our family. Our main bank is Manulife and there is an issue with their debit cards at Walmart - the get rejected 99% of the time. Visa has been our backup, but with that going as well... And no, I won't get a Mastercard - had one before and nothing but trouble with it.

Or maybe my husband and I are the last losers who still use cash?! Lol

Cash is a great way for me to keep my spending in check.  
 
But groceries and gas purchases can get me lots of rbc Visa points. Oh well I will adjust. No choice.

I like to use my visa for bigger purchases, always pay off the balance monthly tho.  
 
consumers are getting 'less choice' all the time! we need another department store!!

I remember when I started working retail in the 90's a lot of places only took either Visa or Mastercard, not both. It usually depended on who your POS provider was. Costco also limits what kinds of plastic you use, for a long time it was only AMEX, and now I think it's only Mastercard.

They are probably getting such a great deal on MasterCard fees (because they get new clients) and visa won't match it so they are saying they won't take it soon. Either visa will come in line with what Walmart or they won't. Walmart is a tough negotiator which is why they are so successful.

There are places that don't accept debit already. It just means you plan ahead and bring cash or run to a nearby ATM and pull some out.  
 
I'm sure people were mad/annoyed when cheques were taken away but they adapted

debit cards, I don't use debit. sometimes I use my visa for emergency purchases or expensive buys. still would like to have that choice though!  
 
I wonder if Walmart will lose customers over this? time will tell.

No biggie. Wal-Mart will lose few customers. Visa though will lose more coin and customer info than they know.  
 
Data mining or info sharing also comes to a end for Visa. Walk mart decided that the privilege to let their customers to use one method of payment is too high.  
 
In a low margin world of the new retail where bricks and mortar vs online, one or two percent charges on purchases counts. I give wallyworld two thumbs up on this decision.

Of course ,I don't buy large items there...but hubby does...or at least he used to. No Visa.. No hubby buying large items.  
( he hates going to Wally World as it us ...lol)

From what I remember from the article that I read a couple days ago, Visa and Walmart could not agree on the terms for the percentage Walmart would pay for customers to use Visa at the store. Visa was offering them the lowest percentage rate anywhere in Canada, and it wasnt good enough for Walmart. Walmart was slowly going to take Visa out of its stores, starting in July in a couple stores in Northern Ontario. Then moving across Canada.  
 
As for Walmart wanting people to use their Mastercard, why not ? More money for them. But they arent limiting customers to only their Mastercard, its any Mastercard.  
 
I myself only have Visa. As one person said earlier, most people have more than one credit card. I dont, one card is enough. I cant pay it off, why get another card to not be able to pay off?  
 
As for when they stop taking Visa in Brandon, OH WELL. They will get my business when I have cash and I will go else where when I dont.  
 
Its the cost of running a business, risks and all. I personally dont think they care, they are too big of a business to worry about a bit of loss business. Besides, I think Visa will kiss Walmarts butts to get their business back.

They need competition here in Brandon.....simple as that.

the few people that will stop shopping at Walmart because of that reason, will make absolutely no difference to them. You are a drop in the bucket of the huge corporate monster that is Walmart.

This is similar to Costco and American Express. They couldn't come to an agreement on the terms, and Costco let go of American Express and went with Mastercard.  
 
IMO, I have both. I prefer the Mastercard as I get air miles. Use my Mastercard for 90% of my purchases.

I use visa to collect points, we spend on average 150 a week on groceries at Walmart but if they won't accept my visa then I'll go elsewhere. I would only get a second card or change cards (mc) if we had a Costco, then it would be worth it. Clearly Walmart has no loyalty to me and my needs as a customer so I will show them the same respect.
