I want to sell my home and was wondering what helps to get a good value back.  
How much do home appraisals cost? Who does them?  
Anything else I can do to get a good value for home?

We went through a bank to get our home reassessed but we still had to pay out of pocket. Around $500. We had Cherie at CL Appraisals come out and do the appraisal.

Any houses in the area you are in that are comparable? Check out some open houses and see how you stack up. We just had a flood in my area so I know closely what mine are going for.

Do you need an appraisal? I dont recall ever having anyone other than my realtor provide a estimated value for my home. Than again I suppose if going private sale you'll need one if you dont have similar style homes in your neighborhood to compare to.  
 
I know realtors have access to dollar values that homes in neighborhoods have sold for in past, not sure if this is something a private seller can get access to or not for a fee possibly.  
 
I listed things I disliked when looking at a home before re reading your post, I'll just leave them anyway.  
 
Three worst things IMO are:  
 
1. Dirty house, take the time to wipe down tables/counters run a vacuum/sweep and mop if necessary also dust. If you cant be bothered to tidy up a home before a showing I assume you dont have time to do proper home maintenance either.  
 
2. Declutter, not only does a cluttered space look messy it makes your home appear smaller and makes it harder for future homeowner to imagine their stuff in the home.  
 
3. Paint if it needs it, if you have some outdated paint/walls are best up from kids etc take the time to patch and paint. Fresh neutral paint goes a long way. If you have some extremely funky taste in colors like bright yellows and greens etc definitely consider redoing with a more basic color that appeals more to the masses.

Go through your house and yard with a buyer's eye. A clean house and yard will sell easier than a dirty house (similar to a vehicle).  
 
Make sure that it is clean and tidy! Dust!!!! Cut the grass. I looked at a house a six years ago and I was turned off because they didn't dust, and it was on the market for 3 weeks. The house was listing for $425 too, so a more expensive place.  
 
If you can't paint the walls yourself, at least wash the walls. Do the little things that need to be done, like replacing broken plug in covers.  
 
Some things may not increase the value of the place, but if the house looks better and sells quicker/easier, that is worth a lot too. I've had 4 realtors come into my house when I was realtor shopping and they all said "wow". My house sold within a week.  
 
Some renos are worth it, some not so much.
