I am in the planning type stage for putting a roof over my deck on the back of the house. I am wondering who would be good for this job and ballpark idea of cost.

If someone gives you a price I will be amazed. Is the roof a continuation of the house, is it intersecting to the existing roof? Are you wanting it on a post and beam? Is it going to be inclosed? What is the size of the deck? Foundation work/piles? There are too many variables here to even do anything with.  
 
Make a sketch of what you are wanting, size will help, take to a lumber yard and get some material costing. Go to Brandon Area and Planning and run things by them. You will need a permit. Talk to the yards too about who they recommend doing it for you.

Building almost any structure in Brandon will require a permit. You can go ahead and hope to not get caught or reported.  
 
You will avoid a lot of stress to talk to someone from the planning board. Most are approachable. Bounce some scenarios off them.  
 
Many hate building inspectors but the rulings create more permanence. I have observed structures where shortcuts were made. Eyesores headaches and expenses down the road were the result.

I've never understood why people believe this myth. Permit requirements have ZERO to do with whether or not it's attached to another structure.

From the sounds of it you will need to look into a permit as it sounds like you are attaching a new structure to a already exsisting structure which needs a permit

We have a roof over our deck. I have a love/hate thing with it. If I had to do it again, I wouldn't (note: our house came with it).  
 
It's a tremendous amount of hassle. It leaks where it joins with the roof. It's pitch is shallow with makes it accumulate snow which needs to be shovelled off (it's attached to our roofline, but the pitch changes where it meets). It also gathers a tremendous amount of run-off when it rains, which then has to go somewhere (really, really long extensions). It requires an enormous amount of maintence, depending on how you build it.  
 
Is it a lovely extension to our house, this outdoor room? Why yes, that's why we were enamoured with it when bought the house. I have come to loathe it. It's a source of endless debate in our house whether we keep it or get rid of it.  
 
If I had the opportunity to do it again, I would build a regular patio or deck in it's place and put a store-bought gazebo on it. That's what my brother did, and it's lovely.

Easy to answer for myself. What I build in my yard that is not attached to my house is a gray area. A swing set or teeter totter requires a permit now? I think not. Neither those or a smoke house. A small green house?. It is those grey areas. I also think if it is attached physically to the house insurance kicks in.

Current bylaws state that if you build a permanent structure over 100 sq feet, you need a permit. So a small greenhouse or even shed is fine, but anything larger you require one.  
 
That's not very grey, IMO.

There are many variables to look at. Mobile homes that want additions you don't want it to be attached so it can float with the trailer. If you have a permanent foundation it needs to be attached to your house. I am on concrete piles and the addition I want needs to be on piles or some foundation attached to my house. If I wasn't on piles I needed to have a floating addition. No swing sets but if you have certain size pool per say yes you need a permit, fire pit, permit. Just cause it is your property doesn't mean you can just do what you want. Anything within my property is covered under my house insurance, attached or not.
