Question mounting hooks

If I have a space 46" wide and I have 6 1" wide hooks to mount, how far apart do they have to be to be evenly spaced apart? Assuming the first and last hook are right on the edges of my space.

Simple math

46 divided by 4 (the remaining hooks)=: 11.5 inches based on centre of each piece.

The math above will mount 5 hooks not 6. To do the simple math you need to figure out how many spaces not how many hooks. So in your example 4 hooks makes 5 spaces.

Take the total distance (46) and subtract the total width of the hooks (6). This leaves 40 inches of space. 6 hooks results in 5 spaces, so devide the 40 inches by 5, you need to leave 8 inches between each hook.

Providing the outside of your edge hooks are the 0" and 46" mark. Then 8" it is.
0"+1"+8"+1"+8"+1"+8"+1"+8"+1"+8"+1"=46“
Edge to edge of hooks needs to be 8".
