I hope this link will work. It talks about how houses now burn faster than ever and there was in 2018 talk of mandatory fire alarms in old/new houses and even sprinklers in newer homes.
'I think the concept that the fire department will come and save you all the time is a myth' David Burke · CBC News · Posted: Jan 14, 2018 10:00 AM AT | Last Updated: January 14, 2018
Burned-out homes and distraught families are often all that's left in the wake of a new breed of house fire that feeds off flammable furniture and open-concept designs.
I think that quote says it all.
The open-concept design allow the fires to spread quickly as there is no doors/rooms to keep it contained. Older houses each room was enclosed and doors of rooms not being used were kept shut. Even going upstairs the stairs were enclosed with a door.
It seems that modern furniture is more flammable.
Long time ago I had a rather old fashioned couch. A lighted cigarette dropped on one of the cushions but it was hours before I noticed and put it out. Only one cushion was slightly damaged so just bought a new cover. Nowadays I guess I would be dead and not a member of E-Brandon.
