I am a plumber, though I have never done service work{ eg, in your house}, I only do new buildings, almost all are commercial dwellings. So when my neighbour asked me to come over and look at a leak in his basement, I agreed.  
 
On the way over there he explained to me, he had already called a plumber who charged him around 150 for his call, AND still couldn't find the leak. Within a matter of seconds I knew what it was, told him how to fix it, and offered him my help, he refused saying " he could handle it" And he did.  
The point of this story is, yes plumbers are expensive, but when they show up and charge you, with nothing getting accomplished, you should seriously question what is going on.  
 
When I found out what happened, I was quite angry,poor guy paid for nothing!! Not only that but now he thinks all trades people are crooks. Seriously folks, plumbers are like mechanics, find a good one or you'll get bent!  
 
P.S. Thank god I have a good mechanic!!!
