Painting fake wood paneling

Has anyone painted over fake wood paneling, and had a great outcome?
I've heard mixed experiences on the outcome.
I've been told that you have to wash walls (obviously), then sand them lightly to rough them up to accept more paint, and only then can you go ahead and paint.
I purchased Behr Premium Plus Ultra, which is 1/2 primer, and 1/2 paint to kill 2 birds with one stone.
I just don't want to have to bother sanding all the walls if I don't have to.
Help? Experienced wallboard painters?
