If I was a mouldy mattress, how would you clean me?

I live in a basement apartment, and have been here only 2 months. My boxspring couldn't get down the stairs so my mattress was just on the floor. I finally got a bed frame for my bed, but when I lifted up my mattress, it had a bit of mould or mildew on it!!
I've left it sitting upright, by an open window to let it dry. I "febreezed" it, and I just bought bleach, but every site I read says to take the mattress outside for this... I'm scared if I do it will get stolen or damaged (pets, kids, etc.)
Does anyone know how to fix this? Is the mattress even salvagable?
