I am just wondering where I can get a detailed estimate on Hardy Board for the front of a house??  
 
We called one place, I guess I cant name the name on here, got a quote for removal and re install of new siding. Asked for a Detailed quote so we can compare the price per square foot to other companies.  
Just got a final price plus tax, Not what I asked for.  
 
Called them back and asked for a detailed price and They don't do Detailed pricing....  
 
How does a person know what they are getting without a detailed price ???

When you say you want to compare. If it's a small job why should they price it and give you details so you can make it easier for the other companies by giving them a break down over the phone. It's wasting their time but not the other companies

Well the job isn't small I think, It is the front of a house, his price was just shy of 4K...  
 
We asked for a detailed quote so maybe save a few bucks by doing the removal of the old siding ourselves. If it was a substantial amount we could have saved by removal ourselves, we would have done it.  
 
I know of other companies in the past that have asked " What did the other guy charge? " so they can price a bit lower to get the job.  
Well I don't think its right them asking or me giving that info out. If you want the job then price the job accordingly, not lowball the other guy just because.  
 
And I will mention when we asked this company for a detailed quote they were quite rude in saying why they wont give me one....

and what was the reason they gave?

they said that different companies charge more for this and less for that, His price is all in one....I want to know how much per square foot I am paying, not just an overall price....

They can't give you what you want just move on to someone that will . If they have nothing to hide they will tell u. Shouldn't matter how big the job is . You don't buy a car without knowing the numbers .

Brandon Guy, you are totally right....

If you removed yourself. A lot of companies don't like to give sq foot prices because other companies will ask your for a price and even if you say you won't give it the guy down the road may have screwed them over giving the other company a price. It's hard to keep competitive when other companies do that which is probably why they don't like to give breakdowns. I had a plumber explain this to me a month ago about a AC unit and his competition said they'd beat the price by $100 not good business practice

Is it not good business?? Why should people settle on one guy because it may hurt him. If my plumber says hey I'll fix ur water heater for 100 bucks and I call another and he says he will do it for 80 I'm gonna go with 80 . 1 I'm saving money 2 they are both certified 3 they both offer warranty. The world is cut throat . If they want the business then they should be onboard . They don't like it McDonald's is always hiring.

It's one thing but when they say what did so and so price it as them say we'll beat it by $20 it's crappy business practice. Maybe if a competitor under does where you work and you lose your job because of it you'd understand. It's called integrity. Anyone who won't take time to come do an estimate on their own but wants a competitors price over the phone is a company I wouldn't do business with.  
 
I would also double check with the manufacturer because maybe warranty is different. Which when we did our shingles, I did talk to the manufacturers and there were companies whose work they wouldn't warranty because of improper installation

Have lost out on work due to under cutting . It's part of the game .

I think if a guy gives you an estimate, that should be their best price, not when they call you back and ask what the others are charging then they go down, that just isn't right at all...

Make sure you pick the best guy for the job not necessarily just the guy that would do it the cheapest.
