There are a lot of truths and maybe mistruths in some of the comments. When it comes to the pricing of materials sometimes contractors do get a bit of a price break but not always will that show up to the person getting the work done, the difference in price is sometimes used to generate revenue to help keep a contractors business profitable, and if a person has a crew working for them there are times that are slack and people still like a pay check.
If you know that your house is needing shingles sometimes a person can take some time and shop around and check out sales and this can result in pretty big savings.
When it comes to getting the work done by freelancers sometimes you are talking about people who do the work for companies during regular hours and take on extra for evenings or weekends, so I wouldn't say that these people aren't qualified to do the job or don't do a good job.
When it comes to upfront money that could have a bit to do with whether your established or just starting up, nobody likes to get burned but when your just starting up it really hurts, also depending on the customer upfront money might not be a bad idea.
Nice to see the comment on the fact that both contractors as well as customers can be a bit shady. Just remember one thing, it's your money and check out all options available. I maybe shouldn't say this but I have seen some work done by contractors in the building industry that would be called questionable under building codes.
