look for a contractor who will be transparent with you. for example they give you their price to "supply and install" all of the work (they will supply all items and install everything), for their quoted price plus profit.
stick to a reputable general contractor who will coordinate all other installers such as flooring, plumbing, electrical etc and you won't have to be calling around town and scheduling all the different trades.
as for selecting flooring and paint colours etc, yes you will be provided with options or you can present your own and they will price it out for you.
get a written contract showing detailed INCLUSIONS and EXCLUSIONS of the contract. this will help if you want additional work done and they can tell you if they DID or DID NOT include that in the contract, and it should be black and white, no gray area as for what they will/will not do for the price. if there is a change to the contract, make sure they tell you what the fee will be (their cost + some profit) before they start the work. any reputable contractor will know all these procedures and should follow them to protect themselves and yourself.
when doing renos, cheap is not the best way to go. quality and reputation is what gets you far. stick with someone who has MUCH experience so you know they will still be around for warranty work that may be required in the first year after completion.
