black lumps in yard

We moved into our home last winter and in spring our yard was covered with black lumps. They went away in the summer but now they're back. We live in the south end and notice the nearby green space is covered with them too. Any ideas? Worms? Ants? When I smoosh it no ants come out.

Night crawlers probably. Very difficult to get rid of I have been told.

Depends how big, but we had a mole a couple summers ago that was leaving dirt piles.

Same thing here at our house. Not much you can do, just keep your grass as healthy as you can. Over seeding, seems to help. But still. Get some lumps.

In the south end as well. We have garter snake pits - but couldn't attribute 'em to snakes. There weren't any holes around that the dirt would have been thrown out from. Dug 'em up - didn't find any further holes within, nor any ant hills. Night crawlers? Didn't find any of those either - though I suppose it's possible......

you've got night crawlers. Go out at night with a flashlight, catch them and sell them to anglers, a gold mine as it were.....

Went out last night and it's totally night crawlers. Tried to catch some for fishing, but they were too fast and I got too grossed out, haha. Thanks all!

Trick to catching them

I had them for years and I catch them for fishing also. There is a trick to catching them and once you get the hang of it you can get 25 in 15 min. I took 200 up north for our annual fishing trip.
