water softner

So... Looks like we are in the market for a new water softner. Ours is 12 years plus old and is no longer doing its job. Now as I have never actually shopped for a softner I'm not sure what to buy. I've read the reviews on the Home Depot GE brand they sell and they are terrible. We have 5 people in the house and run a dishwasher and of course the washing machine. And everybody showers/ bathes everyday. I know through a water test that our water is hard. My question is what kind of a softner do you have and are you happy with it? What did you pay for yours? Also looking for something that is dyi friendly as with the cost of the thing hiring someone to install as well is not in the budget!!
