has stopped doing it's defrost cycle. Does anyone have an idea of a cause of this &/or how to correct it? Any suggestions are appreciated. I've unplugged it overnight then plugged it in again: still the same.

How do you know it's quit it's defrost cycle? How long has it been going on?  
 
If it's because there's been build-up, maybe check the seals first. If it's not sealing perfectly, with all the humid weather we've been having it might be that it just can't keep up with it.

it had times when it would stop freezing: the fan would stop going. No problem with the seals. We still have to pull really hard to open the doors. Thx.

I'd do that but I'm still waiting for a part they ordered for me approx. 17 years ago. I'm thinking a new fridge is going to be the solution.

I would suggest that your freever is actually froze up. Unplugging it overnight wouldn't have been long enough for it to thaw. Unplug your fridge, open the freezer door, and let it sit for at least 24 hrs. If you have a small fan to blow air into the freezer, that will speed it up a bit. Good luck!

That's what our problem was a few years ago as well. Thawed it out completely and worked perfect after.
