Even if they don't vent outside they still will filter some greasy odours from the air but if they are plugged up then they are just making noise. I use mine when frying meats for this reason, but it is vented outside. A previous poster said they use the fan in winter to remove humidity but in my house, I have to run humidifiers so if I am just boiling water, I make use of that moisture, yet will still run it for meats.
