considering stainless steel counter for my kitchen island for prep area....wondering if anyone has one and can speak from experience on what you like and don''t like. I know the pros and cons from researching this option but wanted some personal opinions....thanks

We have stainless countertops for our whole kitchen and I can't say enough how much I LOVE them. Yes they will get scratched up BUT IMO it adds to the character, I don't even notice the little marks.  
The best benefits are : hot pots won't burn or mark them, NOTHING stains them, you don't have to treat (protect)them like natural stone, and they won't crack or chip if something falls on them! But the best part is how easy they clean up. No blood products can get in and breed bacteria, they aren't porous like ceramic or stone.  
Can't say enough how much I like them and I'd put them in any kitchen and bathroom!

I never heard of a residential stainless steel countertop in a kitchen so I googled pictures of it WOW! Looks really great so my opinion if you have the chance do not be afraid you should go for it. If the cost is less than granite or quartz than even better decision.

That it is steel overlayed and siliconed to a plywood or OSB substrate so that they remain level and true and no warping, twisting or buckling over time. The natural wear is something you will need to understand and be ok with. They will scratch and dent.(another reason for the plywood) Scratches can be buffed out with steel wool from time to time if you want a nice shine on the countertop for some reason. I have seen them with a hammer finished edge profile to minimize the look any dents that may happen.
