Kids and Skateboards

I am curious what the safest age is to let a child start skate boarding. "Mini Soul" is 5yo and he just aches when he sees other kids with one. So, I am starting to mull over gift ideas and was wondering opinions on this ....
He is very high energy and this could be a dangerous thing for him, or ... on the hand, it may direct his attention to something he may enjoy and excel at.
IDEAS?
