If you could go back and change anything in your past or to influence another's potential opportunities (or lack thereof), what would they be?
I have a family member who will be turning 18 shortly and I have already suggested (albeit strongly) to not get a tattoo or credit card until at least 12-18mths after their birthday. Not saying they are considering such, but to just nip things in the bud, so to speak.
I think this would provide a chance to deliberate and consider how much you really want and are committed to something.
I remember the momentus occassion of turning 18 and it was an overwhelming experience. In just one week I turned 18, graduated from high school, acquired my driver's license and left my parent's home in a huff. Hind sight being 20/20, it was a recipe for disaster. I was a kid in the candy store and too much happened too quickly. I was very unprepared for the responsibilities and freedoms.
So, as my family member approaches their own 18th birthday it has compelled me to re-examine my past experiences and voice my concerns. Many will suggest that it all hinges on positive parental roles and I hope that instilling these ideas prior to the birthday is just that (even though I am not their 'mom').
So! That being said, I believe that tattoos are permanent (of course) fixtures and that the irresponsible use of credit cards can hinder the send-off to a fresh new adult.
Am I being over-sensitive or just out of line?
