I have not seen a lawyer. I have my mind made up 90% but I would like to hear from other parents who have gone through this. I do not want bashing just straightforward information.  
 
Our daughter who is a young adult has become an addict and thAt has led to her doing crimes to support her addiction. She is basically homeless. We have decided to stop the cash drain as she uses it to keep addicted. She has had several shoplifting charges in Winnipeg. Finally the judicial system has caught up with her. She is in Headingley jail. She says she wants to be bailed out and wants to change. I went to the courts to see what is involved. She is charges with several thefts and many failure to appear for court dates but...  
She tells me she has dealt with her charges and this is only to keep her from further crime. What are the steps of being charged, bail and so on? I have never dealt with this before

Let her sit in jail and do her time! She needs to know that there are consequences to her actions! As hard as it is, it will help her in the long run

Is she in jail or remand?

She would be in remand if you are able to post bail. This means they are holding her until her court date as they feel she may not appear otherwise. Headingley is a Provincial Prison for men who are convicted of crimes and sentenced to any amount of time up to 2 years less a day. I believe they do have a section for people being held in remand.

She is in Headingley jail in the women's section.

be tough for you to decide. I have none (mean zero) experience in this but as earlier comment maybe leave her jail hope she will really and think things further and better as she sits in there for a while. It may not be best for you but maybe for her it is. Hope she won't hate you for not bailing her, just talk to a counselor instead of lawyer.

Your daughter needs professional help. Getting off drugs rarely is as easy as saying no thanks, I'm sorry for you. Your in a bad spot of trying to figure things out. I would wait for more info because none of what's being said adds up. If you want to help your daughter take some money and save it up so when she needs help you can help her in a way that won't end up hurting either of you.

Not that it really makes a difference where she is physically, but she will be in the Women's Correctional Centre. This is not part of the Headingley Correctional Centre, which is the men's facility. WCC is north of the highway, HCC is south.  
 
As for the bail, unless you are going to physically take her to her court date, there is a good chance she is going to skip it and you may lose your money. This is without knowing her personally of course, but in the case of addicts, they will generally say what they have to say to get what they need, which in this case is your money to get them out of jail. She already has several failure to appears, so what has she done (not said) to make you think it will be different this time?  
Unfortunately there is no 'right' answer here. Do what you feel is best, but be prepared to be disappointed, and don't shell out any money you can't afford to lose.  
Also, her saying she has dealt with other charges doesn't really mean anything. If she plead guilty and received probation, she needs to complete that probation without breaching it to consider it 'dealt with'.

This is difficult to fix quickly. Jail might be the safest place.  
 
It took many years to get to this crisis. The cost is very high.

all get on the same page with a good plan.......that she follows.......

Many depressed people turn to alcohol, over-eating or drugs.  
 
Marijuana is effective in treating depression but it may lead to  
 
more dangerous and more addictive substances. She likely has  
 
not cooperated well in the past.......As a parent, you must intervene.  
 
Each of us must be able to get up and go, every day. The secret of happiness  
 
is in your ability to solve each problem, quickly, as it comes at you.

That you are dealing with this. I was in a similar position with my boyfriend... I had no idea he had an addiction until AFTER he was put in jail and then he was denied bail. But in my opinion jail may have saved him and our relationship- there's no drugs in jail ( well at least where he is) so he was forced to detox. He is now a completely different person, he has started counselling and anger management and wants to fix himself... I truly believe none of that would have happened had he not been arrested.  
 
It's a hard decision and you can only help so much. Maybe letting your daughter sit in jail for a period of time will help like it helped my boyfriend!

I appreciate the people who poste and kept it kind. I understand her addiction so much better now than when we found out 2 years ago. I sought counsel from my al-anon sisters and brothers, a professional,and a lawyer. Much as I knew in my brain not to bail her, my heart as a Mom was telling me to do different. I chose to write her a letter telling her to use this time constructively and to start her recovery. I hope that she gets past her anger and opens the door so we can visit. Thank you for all the positive support. I wish I wad going through this year's ago or I would go back to school and become a counsellor for families going through this
