For all those who have recently had their newborn baby boys circumsized in Manitoba, I am wondering what the cost and experience was for you in the recent year. We had our little boy circumsized when he was born in 2011 and are currently expecting another boy and wondering if there are any changes since then so we can know what to expect. Thank you.

I had my son in 2014, was free at that time, definitely could have changed by now though lol

I had my son circumcised last year. As long as it was done within the first 30 days he was born it is free. I'm not sure if it's changed since then.

Thanks for the response so far. In 2011 we had to pay and his was done within 30 days not the day after because dr that did it was away. Just wanted to be prepared for the cost incase there still was one!

The hospital does anesthetics for free? How much are the pain meds for the baby? Free too?

My son had it done in 2011 within 30 days and the cost was $300 - half to Doctor Elves and half to the hospital. There is no anesthesia, they receive infant Tylenol before the procedure.

Infant Tylenol for surgery?

Usually the baby is given a glucose (sugar) solution which starts the endorphins which seem to keep the pain at bay than its suggested to give the infant Tylenol for pain after.

Would you let a doctor cut off your skin without some type of anesthetic? I wouldn't, even paramedics give morphine or something in an emergency.

We just had our son done in June of 2016. It's free if done within the first 30 days. It used to cost money to get it done but it doesn't anymore (as long as is done in the 30 day time period). He got baby Tylenol before hand as pain medication and sugar water during to soothe him- no other anesthetic. Overall good experience, the doctor doing it was very experienced. We had no issues afterwards.

Always amazes me when people say the experience was good. Luckily for the boy, he'll never remember the experience. No one knows the pain a boy experiences during a circumcision.  
 
Having said that, when done as an adult, circumcision is no picnic. I know from experience. I was put under, and the immediate recovery was extremely painful. Not a fun time. FYI, I made the choice for personal reasons.

It is free because Manitoba Health now covers the cost to the hospital and to the Doctor. You must be a resident of MB with a MB Health registration number.

I think it's wrong to have it done to your child for "personal reasons". I can see doing it to avoid health problems along the line maybe but I know if I ever had a child that decision would be left up to them when they are older. The wide majority of uncircumcised men have no issues whatsoever. Saying it's a personal choice makes it seem like the person getting it done to them is the one making the decision.

The things people put there kids through. Smh how would you like your genitals mutated. Don't worry we'll give you a sugar cube first. What a farce! Maybe you should research circumcision and see that there is really no benefit.

Like I said, I was circumcised as an adult for personal reasons, really meaning to say I made a choice and will leave it at that.  
 
Any parent that makes the decision to have their son circumcised is doing it for personal reasons, unless their faith dictates otherwise. I've been involved in many discussions on circumcision. Parents reasons range from "how it looks", "it's how our family does it", "it's healthier", blah blah blah. You get right to the bottom and parents are making the choice for their son because the parents just want their son circumcised.  
 
There are risks either way. Pick one. Either way, things will work out.

Really. You sound like you think there is no benefit to vaccinations as well. Better to be done as an infant than as an adult because of infection.

Genital mutilation is illegal in many countries. It will be illegal in Canada in less than a decade and we will all look back and wonder how it was ever legal to mutilate our children's genitals. It will be similar to our current view of legal slavery in North America.

There are no benefits to routine circumcision.

I was circumcised shortly after birth for NO good reason. My parents did it merely out of ritual. I had no choice in the matter and cannot go back to how I was before this procedure was forced on me. Unless your doctor says that your child absolutely NEEDS to have it done, don't. If it's not medically urgent, it is simply ritually cutting your baby! If he wants it done as an adult, atleast he was able to make the decision for himself.

Comparing circumcision to vaccinations is just ridiculous.  
 
I agree it would be better to have it done at birth rather than after an infection, however that is assuming that you will actually get an infection. Like I said earlier the wide majority of men have zero issues. Instead teach your kid proper hygiene.

Did I miss the part where the OP asked for opinions on circumcision? NO! They asked for information on COST and EXPERIENCE. Learn to read!

The OP didn't ask for opinions but they did ask about the overall experience. And the experience doesn't necessarily end after the procedure is complete. And if the OP is absolutely sure this is what they want for their child then I'm sure they won't mind if a few people (some of which who have gone through the same procedure) tell them how they feel.

Like I said each to their own... and I dont really care about your opinion. I'd rather not choose to skip out on having it done when he wont remember it happening than have him even have the possibility of having to go through issues later (poor hygiene) or not. That's my choice no one can say I'm doing wrong by my child, I believe I'm saving my child from the possibility of issues later and if I have a chance to do that especially when they won't remember or be able to think back on the experience then I will. thank you for the info about manitoba coverage as that has now changed since 2011 Which just goes to show that it has become more of the norm to help prevent "possible" (not for certain I know) issues in the future.

I'm surprised this thread went as long as it did before derailing to a battle between right or wrong. To all you self-rightous people, nobody cares what you think! You do things the way you want, the OP didn't ask you for your 2 cents, just the people who have had their children circumcised and their opinions. Butt out.

Doctors are not immune to their own personal experiences, culture, and upbringing and biases. 30 years ago they did surgery on babies with zero anesthetic or pain control because they believed babies couldn't feel pain. Doctors are not infallible.  
 
No matter how self righteous you think I am, you are doing something to your child's body that is irreversible and doing it without their consent, for no good reason.

Hopefully your boys don't grow up resentful that they had approximately 75% of their penile nerve endings severed off without their consent.
