Bass Guitars?

I am looking to buy a bass either new or used, preferably used though. For as cheap as possible because i want to learn it. Anyone have any ideas as to what i should look out for, ie) certain brands, quality, or just anything i should know when looking for one.
Or if anyone has one they wanna get rid of, i am game. haha
