Pedal effects

So now that I've got some guitar lessons in and regular practices at home, I've got a lot better. Nothing spectacular but enough to make me curious about the effects of some of the solo leads from some rock bands.
What I'm interested in is the "screaming" sound. Can someone tell me what type of sound pedal effect is that?
