There's a job posting in the classified ads (I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say what it is but you'll easily find it) just so you have an idea the posting is for a maintenance type position grass cutting etc.  
 
One of the requirements of the job is that you must be between the age of 15 and 30 years old at start of employment. Is this not age discrimination? The job could be done by anyone of any age so I'm not sure why they have the age restriction on there? I understand having a minimum age if you were working in a bar serving alcohol or a gambling establishment but this is literally cutting grass. I'm interested to hear people opinions on this

Yes it’s age discrimination. They should be reported to the Manitoba labour board and human rights commission.

More than likely, it’s due to funding from the government. There are programs out there that have certain criteria for who you hire that would have their wage subsidized, one of which is they just be considered a youth. (Which is what this age category is) So more than likely this is why.

Ok that would make sense then. If this is the case they should probably put that in the ad. It just looks bad when they put an age restriction on their ad. Hopefully that is the case. In a time when inclusivity is such a hot topic all around the world it's concerning to see things like this, but definitely understandable of it's due to funding.

It states in the add that they are looking for a student, so I am assuming that it is a requirement for a government grant.

I actually missed the part that said student it definitely appears to be more of a government grant thing the way it's written. I definitely wasn't trying to bash the job poster. Just more so trying to figure out why the age restriction. I'm glad it appears to have been cleared up for me.

There is funding available for people to hire a student and the funding specifies age 15-30.  
They should be specifying in their ad that they want to hire a student.  
I've noticed a lot of ads trying to hire students state minimum age 15 but then list a class 5 license as a requirement, which a 15 yr old will not have.

Discrimination vs wasting time  
 
As someone who applied for a city job years ago I wish employers would be open and honest about any specific requirements before hand.  
 
I applied for a city of brandon job once, and it sounded like a lot of people did, I seem to recall they received over a thousand applications with 200 or so making it to the next round, the physical test which required taking the day off work and waiting around a parking lot freezing before carrying some sandbags up a hill.  
 
After passing the physical test I never heard back, no big deal lots of applicants and all, but a year or so later I met some city employees who work in that department and I mentioned i applied for that department, they laughed and said i had no chance, the job was specifically for a female and non caucasian ideally.  
 
So I would rather an employer be honest and not waste peoples time, but everyone cries age, sex or race discrimination if they do.
