Wow.. are the mosquitoes bad right now. Doesn't matter if its the day or not. I swear I have about 50 of them just on one garage door. Hopefully the fogging will happen.

Worst we’ve seen in our backyard, bad yesterday and now horror movie swarms today. Thought we’d try to get ahead of them and setup a screen tent, only to find that a few dozen somehow found a way in under the bottom parts of the screen that we’d weighed down (obviously need to do a better job!)

Hate to think this could be it for July, but the city’s fogging policy doesn’t lend itself to fast fogging between only testing on weekends, not having those results until Tuesdays and needing consecutive weeks of ‘high’ trap counts to fog (unless an off the charts reading is seen in one week). I hope when things are obviously bad and are expected to get worse that they’ll consider finding a way to test daily so they can be in a position to be proactive and act as soon as reasonable in at least areas that traps show have gotten out of hand.

Live close to the river. Unbelievably bad. Turned around and stopped walking the dogs, literal swarms of them coming at me like out of a movie. This was around 430pm.
Does anyone know private companies that fog yards/properties? Or if that even does anything?

there would be a large mosquito explosion after those storms left lots of standing water. And now is also the prime time for the West Nile Virus carrying mosquitoes, Culex.

Guess just hope your not in a no fogging zone if they do fogging.

Anyone that has been outside knows the city should fog.
We'll see what happens.

Insect repellent recommendations

Help eBrandon! I have a lot of yardwork to do and need a good insect repellent as I almost got eaten alive tonight!
What is good - Kombat Insect Repellent? I appreciate any and all suggestions - thanks so much.

The higher the percentage of Deet, the better the protection.

Spent most of my life in the North with Bulldogs and mosquitoes, even in the bush on trap lines and never seen so many! I cut the grass tonight and had to stop and put jeans, a long sleeve shirt and neck warmer and still got anhilated by 4 million. Fire up those spray trucks boys let's get fogging.

I have lots of yard work to do as well.. had to spray myself multiple times. Wore jeans and short sleeve t-shirt. Guess ill have to change my game plan for tomorrow and wear long sleeve shirt. But then they come after your face!

Wheres the win when we need it..lol.

This is why we spray our own property. By the time the city does it, we will be either eaten alive or put in a tree huggers buffer zone

The critters even attack my pup when we go for a walk in the morning. I live in a rural town and we have no spraying. Just spray clothes with deet. Change clothes and start all over again. And again.

I spray our yard with malathion. It does help but spraying your own yard is only temporary. It's not like they magically all disappear you'll need to do it many times. Need the city to blanket the city to really be effective. But with all bee, tree and hippies plus the city is cheap and their new "guidelines" on when to spray that Adam mentioned will stall long enough until Summer is over and everyone is miserable anyway. So ya COVID to flooded basement to eaten alive by mosquitoes... Awesome, can't wait for winter.

Poulins told me earlier in the week that they sell fogging stuff along with insecticides for lawns/shrubs/etc. Goes without saying, but biggest thing with foggers is to of course be mindful of neighbours.
Department stores have been known to sell zappers. Had ours out a couple nights ago. As much as it was going off constantly all night it doesn't feel like it made any kind of dent.

There's lots of places in Manitoba that do not spray and is not practical to unless its done in the air (aka. like the Minot's et al) . As much as I don't like the little birds, just put your deet on, get some plants that the mosquitoes hates empty your bird bathes every other day etc . If one worried about getting West Nile, its pretty slim getting it. The dragon flies will out in full force soon. Stop panicking.

and they just swarm you. They are just constantly at you. Never encountered clouds of mosquitoes like that before. Crazy how they went from pretty much none to thousands overnight.

Trap Counts

Iceman posted the link to trap counts in the OP. It's interesting and obviously not very accurate. I mean if you look at June 14th and June 21st the numbers are identical except the AFA value 7 to 5?? So yeah don't expect much out of the City they will just play games until Summer is over so may as well get used to them.

I seem to remember a day when I was much younger, people didn't blame the government for the mosquito population, or even rely on them for their control. If we all do our part, the effect can be felt far more widely.

I don't see anyone blaming the Government for the population not sure where you are getting that from. Some people would like them to do better at controlling the population. And yes we are all tough Manitobans but there are extreme times, such as right now, that we need help and we shouldn't have to suffer. You literally can't go in your yard or many other places. You also shouldn't have to wear jeans, long sleeves and bathe in DEET in the short beautiful summer weather we get. Most people have and will continue to tolerate moderate to high mosquito numbers but this is not moderate or high numbers.

Yep your right about the mosquitoes. I live in the West End and just trying to cut my grass had to stop go inside put on long pants and a long shirt and spray myself with deet. After all that I took off my shirt and I had about six bites. Yikes! Bring back the 60 km an hour winds please. Lol.

I live in Rivers and my front door just gets swarmed. I have a mud room and I'm actually thinking of putting a zapper in there just to help with them not coming into the house. It's like they know are just waiting for me to step outside.

Just to point out again, lots of towns in Manitoba 'suffer' as they don't spray. They may complain about but they just accept it and deal with it. Maybe some people can toughen up like other places do.

Just to point out I don't live in a town... Strange how the City of Winnipeg doesn't fool around with trap counts and unrealistic numbers they get out and fix it. Mosquitoes are a nuisance and the city has moved away from malathion and now use a more eco friendly product. We pay plenty in taxes, a lot more than 'towns' in Manitoba do. So let's get at er.

FWIW, just in the area of Betty Gibson this PM and haven’t seen a single one in sun or shade... this after getting overwhelmed in the backyard in another part of town 20 minutes ago. Maybe other folks in the area have seen different results or maybe this inundation of the last couple days is localized to certain areas that will show in the next trap counts.

One of the things I took out of my chat with Poulins was that things were expected to be the worst in areas outside of the city where there’s less hilly topography and is so much water standing around in fields. Maybe that same logic plays into what we’re seeing in town so far too...

I went for a short bike ride yesterday. Could feel the swarms of them hitting my face lol (fortunately the airflow from my helmet kept them away from my eyes).

Getting the bike into the house was something else, though. After fighting with the key in the dark, had to make a dash inside. Ended up enveloping my deck in a cloud of microban just to keep them at bay for long enough to get the bike in lol.

So far our trap counts have not met the criteria to spray for nuisance mosquitoes. https://t.co/NruHciDztg

Parks monitor the traps frequently & will have a new count early next week. If/when the counts meet criteria for fogging, there will be a public notice announcing it.
