Unbearable tonight. Tried sitting outside and only lasted a minute before I had to go back in. It’s too bad as summer is short as it is, would be nice to enjoy an evening outdoors

what a lot of people have been through lately, I hardly think it is asking too much to sit out in the fresh air and enjoy what little of summer we get in some form of relative comfort.
We aren't speaking of other places but of Brandon where we pay plenty in property taxes and expect a particular standard from City Hall in regards to reciprocity.
But feel free to "point out again" how we should just deal with it.

Along the Sask/Man border we have yet to see one of then there flying sucking machines. Please be thoughtful and keep the blood suckers in Brandon where they have a large varied food menu.

Maybe council should hold their meeting outdoors !
That might help them decide what to do.
There would be no hot air coming from anyone as they would have to keep their mouth shut so they don't ingest any mosquitos

another idea, how bout the ones making the decision when to spray>:>:>: work an overnite shift, dusk till dawn, outside.

Anyone know if it is the flea beetle or is it the small black fly biting me as bad the those skeeter.
Some thing small and black sure bites as bad.

The public notice on the city website has been removed. Wonder why? Maybe telling people the trap counts aren't high enough when the second you step outside you get swarmed was a bit too much of a slap in the face, even for city administration.

It wasn’t a notice, it was a reply on social media to a question. It’s still there (see above)... though ultimately they can only answer within boundaries/policy that are in place. If there’s any deviating from that policy it would have to come at the direction of council. If you have a preference either way of what should or shouldn’t be done, this feels like a debate worth sharing feedback with your councillor on before Monday.

If/when there is a decision to fog, I hope adequate supply is in place and ready. I can’t remember the exact circumstances, but there was a situation a few years ago where there was a wait to get the necessary stuff in to fog with.

They'll spray if the criteria is met as per https://www.brandon.ca/mosquito-abatement/mosquito-abatement-program

... or if council decides to override the policy and asks administration to carry out.

Much respect for the balance they have to strike in spraying when only necessary, but the concern I'd have as a citizen is just how high the bar is set in policy and seems like it could be setup to better allow swift response when situation has gotten as out of hand as it seems to have already these last couple days. Suspect that if the policy if followed to a tee without council intervention, if the trap count being taken today shows an off the charts number the soonest it would be learned is Tuesday. Not clear after Tuesday how much time would be required to have trucks on streets between preparing and any buffer zone obligations.

they set the bar too high also!
i can remember an outdoor service at the municipal cemetery and getting eaten alive by the skeeters but of course "numbers weren't high enough to warrant fogging".

the traps are read on the weekends with results posted tuesday. I'm sure they will show a considerable jump now so lets wait til Tuesday

I'm all for complaining to the city. Maybe something will happen. My kids, along with everyone else's, can't go outside right now, and nothing indoors is open (YMCA pool etc), and I'm not even supposed to take them on errands and into stores etc right now just to give us something to do!

I'm usually leery of spraying, but this year I say spray away!

I’m going to. We are about fifty feet from the River. My dogs have stopped enjoying going outside as they are getting so badly swarmed they’re miserable. We’re a little worse than most parts of time every year due to our location.. but this is the worst it’s ever been. We payed someone to cut our grass as it was just too many of them.
Do you know who we complain to? Specific individual or a certain area?

While I can certainly appreciate the trap numbers being low (although if they still are I'm wondering if these traps are set up in huge parking lots), surely whoever is running this town is forced to go outside on occasion and notices what we're complaining about.

Email your ward councillor and express that you would like them to push for immediate fogging.
I emailed mine, and got a reply that he supports fogging as well and “something is already in the works”.
We all know there is always an issue with people getting buffer zones, so don’t let that be the loudest voice.

I live on the river ,mosquitos are bad but not at my place.these are on sale right now for 290$ at Lowe’s,they really work!! Mine keeps my yard free of mosquitos(my yard is a acre in size).no nasty chemicals,poisons,quiet and the trap is full of hundreds of dead mosquitos every day.

Bug zappers don't work on mosquitos, they kill bugs whish are attracted to UV light, like moths (which themselves eat mosquitos) and midges.

That was a bit of a surprise.... even downtown in at least one area without a ton of grass or foliage. Swarms in broad daylight this morning. Would be very interested to learn Saturday trap counts sooner than Tues to understand the extend of the problem and what areas are effected. Maybe out of consideration for knowing it will be discussed at council on Monday, numbers might be avail a little sooner?

That's not a "zapper" it's a magnet that uses tanks of propane and they give off C02 to attract them however they also don't work. I shouldn't say the don't work but they are not as effective as some are sayings. They will get some but results won't be like fogging. And they are very expensive and if not properly set up and placed in the right location and used for long periods of time it's pointless. You could likely have similar results with a can of bug spray. I would do some research before you go and waste money on a mosquito magnet.

Yes I agree mosquito magnets should be installed everywhere in the city.

I remember when we went to Jamaica, they had many of these or something similar installed on their resort but seemed like industrial strength and it worked no matter where you were.

I have found that when sitting outside, a box fan placed close by eliminates the pesky critters from bothering me. They don't like the wind

We’ve got a skeeter vac, similar to the video, and yes, it works. We do have some mosquito in our back yard, not the swarms like the front, but normally we have none. The fogging only lasts until the next hatch, this lasts all summer.

the same can be said about fogging. It is expensive and if not done right, it is pointless. You say the mosquito magnets don't work. Looks like you have several people not agreeing with you. I would be one of them. How long did you use one, in order to form your opinion?

Well I don't care if you agree or not. I've used one for long enough to know it's a waste of money. They work about as good as a $8 can of bug spray. People should not have to waste $300 on a machine and pump numerous $25 tanks of propane to eliminate a few mosquitoes and attempt to enjoy their yards. There is nothing wrong with fogging/spraying. Just go to bed one night, close your windows, go to sleep and let's get this done.
