I don't whine about gas prices.
I just buy gas whenever I can anywhere else except in Brandon. Filled up in Glenboro on the way home on Saturday evening, at 95.9, four cents a litre cheaper than in Brandon (and Glenboro is as far away from Wpg as Brandon, as far as shipping gas goes. Earler in the day it was also 95.9 in Ninette, which is even farther far away from that supposed Wpg distribution centre). Saved me $2.50 I suppose, no big deal, but Grandma always told me that if I look after the pennies, the dollars will look after themselves! or something like that! (Nowadays, it's a case of look after the dollars and the hundred dollar bills will look after themselves
Brandon gas prices are what they are because the vendors can get away with it. Our local market, be it for gas, for cars, for furniture - or anything else - is just barely large enough to make it look like it's a competitive market. But when you think about it, the consumer market in Brandon is very constricted; we are minimum 2 hours drive away any other major or competitive market. Which means that local vendors don't need to take into account out-of-town competitive pricing. Most of us don't have the regular opportunity to take advantage of that not-quite-local competitive pricing on a day to day basis.
Even smaller markets, like Ninette and Austin and Glenboro, price their gas at or about the same price as it is Winnipeg (and retain about the same margin, I'm guessing) in order to keep their local at-home customers at home. The rest of us passing-through types benefit.
