Seen lots of lights on north hill when goin to parade still there a hour later what happened

Not sure exactly how the accident happened but there were 2 very wrecked cars at the intersection of braecrest and 18th, both were face north however on opposite sides of the road and lots of wreckage on the road and median. Hopefully everyone involved is ok.

The info below is from this morning's BPS release. Thankful to read that injuries are not life threatening. The vehicle we saw when we had to go through the detour was in very bad condition.

MVA with INJURIES  
 
At 1717hrs Police were advised a two vehicle accident with injuries at 18th Street North and Braecrest Drive. Both vehicles were extensively damaged and the Jaws of life were used to extract two elderly occupants from their vehicle. Preliminary investigation determined that the SUV with the two elderly occupants was westbound on Braecrest Drive and entered onto 18th Street North and was struck by a northbound vehicle. All three victims were transported to Brandon Regional Health Centre. No injuries were determined to be life threatening but all three were injured. Traffic Members attended the scene to conduct the investigation and the investigation is continuing. Alcohol is not considered a factor at this time.

For years that they need to put lights there... Or figure something out that's a terrible intersection to get thru... Almost impossible to get across... And not much room to go halfway to avoid having to wait for both north and south traffic to settle... My thoughts go out to the families and hope everyone is OK. Please Brandonites be careful...

You shouldnt be going 1/2 way anyway - you don't have the right of way and you end up blocking someone trying to turn off of 18th street. Can't stand when people do that!

I doubt they will put traffic lights at that intersection considering the intersection is right at the top of a hill and traffic will be be backed up and sitting on the hill while the light is red. Semi trucks would also have a hard time getting up the hill once stopped on the hill. It's been discussed and it has always come to the conclusion that it's a hard intersection to improve and there is no easy solution. It's not a hard intersection to navigate safely. Also planning your route and avoiding turning left would also be benificial. Take Knowlron Drive or First Street. But people just need to learnt how to drive safe and what the rules of the road are and how to follow them. It was actually pretty sicken how some people were driving yesterday.

I would just like to point out that Kirkcaldy gets closed off evey summer. Sometimess there is no option but to go left on 18th off braecrest.  
But I do agree it would also be counter productive to put lights there.  
Either way that intersection is a nightmare, and always will be.

I''m surprised there aren't more accidents at that corner.  
 
The planners thought nothing about infrastructure when building north of the river. The only concern was money. Baffled how no one thought maybe, just maybe, people need to get on and off the hill. The Corral Centre and the 18th Street bottleneck is a prime example of zero foresight of brilliant minds seeing nothing but dollar signs.  
 
The last concern I heard was at a council meeting when another complex was approved to go up on Braecrest beside the church. More traffic for 18th & Braecrest. The city and the province are working on the issue. They think the road north of Braecrest will solve the problems or something like that?  
 
Before the city keeps expanding the north hill, they should get the traffic issues figured out. IMO, that would be progress.  
 
It would be silly to stop traffic from fully utilizing the 18th & Braecrest corner. Moving the congestion is not a solution.  
 
I wonder how many accidents or deaths have to occur at that intersection before something is done?

But actually going 1/2 way and then waiting is correct way to make a left turn at that type of intersection. It's called establishing yourself in the intersection. You should only do it if it's safe to do so, and it should be left of centre so people turning left off 18th Street can also complete their turn.  
 
It's similar to establishing yourself to turn left on a solid green at a controlled intersection (something Brandon drivers rarely seem to do, which drives me nuts).

The city and Province can easily resolve that intersection. Now that Patmores is done, Highways needs to expropriate the frontage to continue the service road south and join with Braecrest. Close off access from 18th onto the East side Braecrest of that intersection... and the problem is solved. But they need to move quick, because I can easily predict that land of Patmores will get redeveloped within two years.  
 
Just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Here's the information from the Driver's Handbook.  
 
Making left turns from a street with a stop sign onto a street with a boulevard  
 
• Make a complete stop.  
• Check traffic and when there is no traffic coming from the left or traffic turning in front of you and it is safe, proceed. If traffic is approaching from the right establish your vehicle in the intersection.  
• Complete your turn when it is safe, to the left of the centre of the intersection in the boulevard area.  
 
There are a lot of drivers in Brandon that don't do this correctly. And to quote JackAzz, Can't stand when people do that!

True about sitting in the the median space inside unmarked intersections, as the poster noted above. I just finished a MB defensive driving course and could not believe it was true. (one vehicle at a time) and also can wait inside left turn lane at lights to the point of the light changing. Many city drivers here don't understand these concepts or it scares them.  
I have seen cities in BC that have these left merge lanes which means you only have to yield to traffic approaching from left. The traffic coming from right must merge because the left lane is exclusive to you as it's blocked to traffic coming from right. (see photo).  
Also a two-laned round-about would work there. But then I am not a traffic engineer and there are reasons they have not done this yet.  
It sure seems the driver population has increased in this city. With that, I assume will come many changes.

There's absolutely nothing safe about tying to 'establish yourself in the intersection' at that intersection even if traffic is light!  
 
The only thing that could work at the intersection is have Braecrest curve right into that frontage road. In the meantime, it bit of common sense would suggest just plain ban left turns at the intersection.  
 
The same handbook which you quoted from needs updated about those who can put their automatic vehicle in manual mode and how to use manual mode.

Has always been trouble even before the corral center, when I was learning to drive 20 years ago and that mall area was just a field. When someone is seriously injured at that intersection then something might be done, but it's not much different at 1st and breacrest. Maybe timed lights at the lights at bottom of the hill and the ones at the top of the hill may help

Make a lane from Breacrest that ties in with the frontage road where Patmore's used to be. To go south on 18 you would take that road to the lights and turn left there.

The master plan that I saw a few years back was exactly that . There would be the ability to turn south onto 18th from breacrest on the east side. It was a complete plan that i:ncluded revamping 18th street on top of the hill to the TransCanada.  
 
When and if it will happen is another thing as with all the cash for the 1st and 18th st bridges there may not be a lot left . Time will tell!

Just told my wife that curve the road in front Ford and peavy mart there set lights already there

The province just released their 2017 road improvement list last week and there were no projects on the list for Brandon. So we won't be seeing a new 18th street bridge over the tracks or improvements for this intersection anytime soon.

A traffic circle would eliminate some confusion. Just saying

I agree that traffic lights would make it worse. Southbound, eastbound and westbound would probably be okay with traffic lights, but northbound traffic would be a nightmare, especially in the winter. Large heavy vehicles and less powerful vehicles would take a while to get moving all year round.  
 
IMO a circle wouldn''t work very well for the same reasons. Northbound vehicles having to yield to vehicles already in in the circle would cause traffic to stop and have to try to get moving up the hill.

For anyone wondering what was going on this afternoon up there, the accident reconstruction team was up there working.

when Knowlton was closed it was a near impossible to get across 18th off Braecrest, vehicles were lined up 10 deep. There was a point where Kirkcaldy was closed as well. Traffic issues really need to be a focus, and now that the Corral Centre is expanding, maybe they can look at that nightmare as well.

According to the below release, a passanger in one of the vehicles has since passed away.
