This is terrible. With all they are dealing with, now mumps too.

There is no guarantee you will not get the mumps if you are vaccinated. Your symptoms may be less severe than someone who is not vaccinated but you most certainly can get the mumps. It's highly contagious especially when in prolonged close contact.

While it's true there is no guarantee you won't get mumps following vaccination, ones risk is most definitely significantly decreased. From CDC website "The mumps component of the MMR vaccine is about 88% effective when a person gets two doses." Link: https://www.cdc.gov/mumps/vaccination.html

This is a better article (from CBC) than the one from CTV. Note that vaccination rates in Manitoba's North are said to be higher than the south, and that there has been an outbreak in the Island Lake area for a while now.

Herd immunity. The key to public health. Good on the northerners if their vaccination rates are higher, but it's a numbers game. If less than 90 odd percent are vaccinated, these viruses can persist in a population and spread, eventually finding weak or susceptible individuals. I know a person who was rendered infertile by mumps, had a bad case as a baby. No joke, and nothing to wish on your own child or any other peoples' child.  
 
Too many mental lightweights out there, antivaxxers, endangering their own children, and all the rest in our communities.  
 
I think legal liability should be part of refusing to vaccinate.

Anyone who doesn't vaccinate their children should be responsible for the cost of the treatment and resources when they get the mumps or measles or polio etc.

So people in the shelter with mumps are being move to hotels ..... that's just great.. let's infect a hotel with Tons of people/guests!!! There's no guarantee they will stay in their room and not infect people. Instead they wander around the hotel infecting everything !? What a great option! Won't be sending my kids to any hotel birthday parties anytime soon!!

Is there any way to find out which hotel anyone showing symptoms will be staying in? I have friends coming into town and for obvious reasons I don't want them staying at the same hotel, just in case!

The Trails West and the Redwood for sure, they are overflowing with people. Sick or not you don't wanna be staying there right now.

Please don't make the mumps outbreak sound like it is due to the evacuees from Manitoba's North. It has been going on in the Southern parts of Manitoba (including Brandon) for a while now. Here's an article that talks about the outbreak that has been going on for a number of months now.
