So... I have a fishing shack on rivers lake. I also have a trail camera in a tree pointed at it. Went to my shack and noticed a few things missing. I reviewed my cam. I have very clear pics of the vehicle, and who it was. I know who you are and have pictures to prove. You have two options. Either return what you stole and I'll forget that it happened, or the Rcmp get the video and pictures, and you have to deal with them. Your choice. I'll give you 7 days from today to return everything or you can deal with the Rcmp.

Yes, no insurance is part of it, the other part is I know and have proof of who it is and if they own up to it I'll let it go. If it's not returned, then they learn the hard way not to steal.

And we wonder why society has gone the way it has. So the thief comes back next week for another fishing shack contents!

Hard call really, you know them so you give them a chance but at the same time they know you and sadly didn't give a rats bum. Why bother giving them a chance just go to the police.chances are the stuffs long gone anyways.

There is no way you have a camera. You are just hoping to create a story so the guy would get scared and return your stuff. Ain’t gonna happen, man. And even if you did have a camera, you should immediately turn your evidence into police. That is your best chance of recovery for any of the goods that you claim were stolen. I hardly believe that any person going to the trouble of mounting a camera in the bush to protect their stuff, has so much holiday cheer in them that they are looking out for the best interests of someone who you claim stole your goods. Turn the rat in if you have the evidence. But better yet, don’t keep your valuables in an unsupervised shack. Besides, a camera mounted in a far away tree proves nothing beyond the fact that someone has paid a visit to your shack, which was located in a public space. The situation sucks, but your story/threat on this seems almost manipulative towards the general public. Lesson learned. Just saying ... hard to understand why someone would even put a shack out on the lake with the warm temperatures we have been having all winter. Shows that maybe both you and your thief lack the judgement that you should both have, just to not be falling through the ice in the first place. Wouldn’t catch most people out on the lake, when average temperatures have been hovering between minus five and plus five. Where is your judgement, man?

The original post does not indicate that the shack is actually out on the lake, if he has a cam up on a tree that has a good view of the shack then the shack is obviously on shore or relatively close to shore. In my experience you don''t usually put your shack that close to shore for fishing that a trail cam is close enough that you can ID a person but you know what they say when you assume.... "Kirmit"  
 
Chances of getting your stuff back from a thief that is actually caught are slim to none (theft is low priority), and if you do it won't be for months and months if at all. It seems to me that "Kirmit" doesn't have very much experience of being a victim of theft and going through the process. The amount of time that the thief will do if charged is a fricken joke if they do any time at all. If you really do have pics and footage, I would personally put them up on this post and shame them, spread the word around town, it will spread fast especially in the Rivers area, people like to talk. In the end though I would take what evidence you do have to the authorities.  
 
My question to "sledhead" is was the shack locked? (as little as that may help). How well do you know the people and can you personally approach them safely instead of hiding behind a keyboard and monitor and calling them out? What did they actually take?  
 
I really think the people posting at 2 AM in the morning should power down the computer and hit the hay instead of making themselves sound like total tools. Nothing good happens after 12, isn't that what they say? Not helping "sledhead" out whatsoever by shaming him and passive-aggressively calling him an idiot and a liar. This is where a down vote option would be great for these idiotic comments. Even though reading these idiotic comments are a guilty pleasure of mine.

like this I shake my head. You have given the Criminal a Choice, an ultimatum - return the items taken or you will lay a complaint with the RCMP. Because of this ultimatum you have voided any chance of Criminal Charges being successful. All the individual has to do is present this thread to the Crown Prosecutor, which will result in a stay of Proceedings if charges have been laid. You have made an offer to settle to avoid criminal prosecution - you can't do that. Next time talk to your lawyer before making such a post.

That''s rich. Maybe shacks should be made out of titanium with 3 levels of biometric identification.

If there is a picture of the person stealing, and that person is a preteen, or someone fairly young, there is a chance of shaming or scaring them into returning the items. What I've found out is that it's very seldom that a leopard will change it's spots, seems like liers, cheats, and thieves get pretty set in their ways. Even when confronted with the truth, proof, or fact, all you ever get is denial.

The law not require you to have a lock, name, address and telephone number in plain visibility?

What the .....  
 
Suggesting that theft isn't theft unless the theft is from a known and governmentally approved address?  
On the other hand ... if the OP has evidence implicating somebody of actual theft or vandalism, then he/she should go straight to authority, unless of course it's a brother, or brother in law, or sister, or sister on law...  
Because I don't want them poking around in my shack - get them now because they won't stop until stopped.

No legislation for locking a shack. Only have to display name and address. Not the first time things have gone missing from locked ice shacks. Most people remove anything of value and some even leave the door unlocked to prevent being broken into. However, some vandalism does occur none the less. These days if it's not nailed down, some lower forms of life feel it is their right to take it. Sad times we are living in.
