Do you need your FATHER to give you away?

Over the weekend, a feminist wrote online how she was not going to have her Dad give her away at her wedding, and the response was overwelming. Why? She has a good relationship with her dad, they get along and have what most would consider a normal relationship, but this woman felt "the notion of being handed over" was insluting to women. So she scrapped the dad walking down the isle with her and asked her fiance to walk in with her instead. Is it a big deal to have dad walk you down the isle? Do you need your father to give you away?
