Breakups: what happens

what happens when a couple breaks up? why do some ex-spouses want to hurt the other so bad? My ex, AA Jr, went so far as to fabricate text messages that were supposedly from me, full of insults and threats. Well, I didn't send those texts. Why would he do that? When I asked him, natually he denied it. but whatever. Why do we want to hurt our loved ones?????
