How much would you tip on a $55.00 haircut? I was satisfied with the cut but there was no hair wash and no shampoo, conditioner, or styling product used.  
Any opinions would be really appreciated.

I don't usually tip my hair stylist. I give her a one time tip at Christmas which is probably not equal to what she would get if I tipped all year...but larger than a one time tip. I don't have the money to do large tips every time.  
I work as customer service and I don't get tipped for doing my job. I get paid. I don't expect a tip...and for me it is the expectation of a tip that bothers me.  
Many will disagree and say this is how people in these areas live...I was always taught to treat people with respect and do your job. Waitress, done it, appreciated the tips, did not expect them but went out of my way to give good service. It was my job.  
I don't know what the right answer to the questions is...this is just my opinion that many will disagree with.

do not have a answer but, thought when it comes to tipping ,would be better to just pay better wages to employees and for hair stylists if they are their own boss pay yourself more ,waitresses housekeeping room attendants better wages no tipping

Tipping culture in Canada has gotten way out of hand. If you pay by card, those machines now default to 15% or more. Usually there is a way to change it so you can tip what you want, but when I see those defaults it just makes me want to tip less.  
I agree with others. Tipping should not be looked at as a way to make a living. Wages paid should be sufficient.  
As for the OP's original question, I tip my stylist $5 - because she is great and that is what I feel comfortable with.

The terminal first popped up with 15% 20% 30% and custom tip before anything else. I felt pressured.  
I ended up pressing 15% and paid an extra $8.25 on that $55.00 haircut. With tax it came to $66.00. I was afraid custom tip would get me into a place where I had to tip even higher. Maybe next time I will try custom tip for $5.

If paying by card and want to tip I would tip by cash. If you give cash then the stylist gets all the tip and gets it right away and won't show up on pay stub as income. I have heard in some restaurants that if tips are paid on card it gets split between all the servers not just the one you had.

I figure a tip is earned, food, service, attitude.

I might do a very small tip if they check on things, refill drinks or anything like that but I try to tip for SERVICE. If I am serving myself...depends on what they do for me at the table.

I went to the beer store. I went to the cooler, selected my beer, I grabbed the case, I took it to the counter, I paid the person at the till. Then they looked down at the tip jar on the counter. I then picked up my case of beer, walked out to my vehicle and I put it in and drove away.  
What did they do to deserve a tip? I guess they allowed me to pay them!

How could some or most places justify tipping, it seems quite excessive. You may already feel you slightly over pay for the service and they have the feeling to believe that a minimum of15% is needed, and it's all just for labor, there are no consumable products used so it is all 100% straight cash plus more cash.

......and I never received tips for doing my job, things are expensive as it is without having to tip everyone.....

The thing I hate about tipping is the up in percentage over the years. 20 years ago standard tip was 10%. I worked in a restaurant where you could get a meal for 10 -15 dollars. So I'd make 10% ($1-$1.50) now a meal costs at least $20-30. So at 10% that's around $2-3. Already double what I used to get but now they want 20-30%.  
 
Then there is the tipping for take out and delivery before you even get the service you are tipping for. What is the incentive to be nice and polite if you have already been tipped.

Our hair stylist prefers a cash tip as she doesn't have to pay income tax on it as she would if the tip goes on with the machine. So she says anyway, and I don't notice a couple of loonies or toonies.

There's a general sentiment that employers should be "paying a fair wage" so tip culture doesn't get so far out of control. Two things about that are that I know bartenders and bar staff that could care less about the hourly wage as it's the tips they really make the money on. Secondly, if restaurant owners raised wages, then the price of your meals goes up, giving everyone something new to complain about. Adam mentioned that there's no tipping in Japan, and from what I've learned of their culture, they are leagues ahead of the rest of the world on how people treat each other and themselves in society. The world really should be following their example.

I also was shocked at the Beer store. A tip suggestion showed up when I went to tap my credit card. I don’t think so!!

Why do any of us feel obligated to tip? I’m a wage earner, I don’t get tips! It was my choice to be a wage earner just like hairdressers, waitresses and retail sales staff! My employer gives me a Christmas bonus! That’s my tip for the year! Most employers maybe not all  
give their staff something at Christmas as well!

To tipping! If I go out for a nice meal, which isn’t very often, it’s because I decided to treat my family! My money doesn’t grow on trees either!

I have worked in both the retail and service industries and I know how far a tip can go. Now that I earn enough to tip, I routinely tip someone that gives me service. I know how much people in the service industry are struggling and if there is a way I can help, I always tip. If the service I receive is better than average, I will tip at least 20%.  
 
I have spent years in Brandon searching for that perfect hair cut, and now that I have found it, I add $10 to my $30 hair cut. It not only sends a message of my appreciation, I also see it as money being inserted into Brandon's economy.  
 
I also tip a little extra for service that I receive at a locally owned establishment.

in most of the world, tipping is not practiced. The amounts today are based on the US where restaurant servers are paid peanuts. Go to Europe or Australia - rare to see. Anywhere you get large numbers of tourists, you will see tipping. Sometimes, even if the staff don't want it and look at you funny or assume you are from the US.
