Lots of good things & good reminders. I have a few "my mother taught me" ones to add.
1) Hope & work toward the best of times, but have a plan for the worst- make sure you know how to stretch a dollar if need be.
2) Speak loudly enough that those close by can hear you, but not the whole room- in a restaurant for example your noise doesn't leave your table!
3) An elder should never be standing while you are sitting. If there are not enough seats to go around (doesn't matter if it's a family gathering or on a bus with strangers) you give up your seat.
4) Help often where you can. Whether it's mowing the neighbours grass because they're away or unable (or sometimes just because you're out there anyway) or volunteering with a group, or just holding a door or helping someone with their groceries. Being helpful and kind is never a bad decision.
5) Never chew gum when dealing with the public or at work, it is extremely unprofessional.
6) Unless you've been invited to do otherwise, you address people as sir or mam- If you know their names Mr. ___ or Mrs. ___.
7) PARDON!
Though I do still try & remember most of these, I must admit I'm pretty lax on some like #6 especially, now that I'm older, unless people are quite obviously older than myself, or I'm at work lol.
